What is a wing wall?

I too would suggest removing the tree and focusing on the landscaping and the entry. I would consider using a majority of the budget on the other side of the home, perhaps adding a covered patio.

I absolutely agree with Keitha. Also, small pergolas for the garage door and windows. And, a larger one for the front door/entrance way. Pergolas are the wooden(or other material) structures above the doors/windows.

Another possibility is a more unusual garage door?

The back (which is the lakeside) is essentially the same, but is literally just a flat wall of siding (no porch or anything). Add patio ??? How you will go to that patio from inside of house.

There are sliding glass doors and some windows, but no porch.

A wing wall is a decorative or functional wall that is built adjoining the house, some call them abutment walls. They can be built from brick ,stone or wood. The idea in this situation is to broaden the width of the house and add another element for the eye. If your interested I will get you some pics. I agree with the other that the garage door could handle more trim and replaced, shutters added, tree moved. Large lights by the door would help.
I understand that most folks want the lakeside to project the best view, hence the reason the vent pipes and roof vents on the front. The pipes could be painted to match the roof, turbine vent removed and ridge vent installed, the box vents removed and gable vents installed on the side.

I would recommend an interesting garage door to begin with. A few ideas would be Frenche Port doors - they look like french doors but are actually garage doors, or perhaps a carriage house look...

A belt of wide trim around the waist of the house is a classic solution to bland facades (front and back).

For 30k, add shutters at all windows front and back, trade out top panel of garage for window strip (plain, individual squares) but keep rest of door (garage door places can do this for 1/4 cost of whole new upgraded door). Windows are like eyes for the front of house - adding those to front will make a huge positive difference. This shouldn't add up to much.

Then, hire a landscape designer and discuss fabulous entertaining patio in rear, using pergolas, tone trimmed site walls, colored concrete paving, new plantings w minor adjustments :to front as noted above. Focus on the positive side of the house- this is not so bad- house built to withstand elements well is good on edge of lake.

Photo one..garage door replacement for around $3k. Photo 2...lighting for either side of garage doors for $800. Photo 3... Beef up support post and add a second one for visual interest. Remove bush. Larger arborvitae to hide utility meters. Put the rest of your money on your deck. Use composite decking for the longevity. Use treated lumber wrapped in cedar for the support posts. Use clear panels instead of spindles for an unobstructed view of the lake.

Definetely need to address the upper windows with bolder trim. Did you know there are kits to add interest to your garage door? I would also add container plantings to either side of the garage entry. Something tall! And I agree with other comments...do something about the tree blocking view to front entry. Adding lighting (sconces) to either side of garage entry would help too!

First off - your house has great bones - love the neutral tones and the stone. As far as directions you can go - I think your house could go at least three ways; Contemporary, Arts and Crafts, or Colonial. I am less inclined to see it as colonial - but you have to think about what also works on your street. Don't do something that is so out of place - but most importantly do what you like.

Now - I love the pine tree near the entrance - but here's the issue - it blocks your door and it will only get bigger over time. I would move this to another part of your lot. It is a lovely tree but in time will be an issue for you.

I have seen other post some of these ideas - but imagine if you did a trellis across your garage doors - it would add dimension - color in the summer. Add large colorful clay pots on either side of the garage doors - pick a color to pop - dark red or go bold. Make sure the pot is oversized or it will not be bold enough to make statement. A new garage door - if you go with an Arts and Crafts look you could have a dark stained garage door - or go with a modern look - wood or steel with frosted glass panels. More colonial - go more carriage style.

Your entrance - once you remove the tree - I would do pillars that make a statement - like a tailored craftsman pillar - bring in the Arts and Craft feel - your house could work well with this style. Add some great house numbers.

I live in Michigan and your house looks like many houses in the city of st Clair shores which looks out at lake st Clair. Thank you for link also. Love the suggestions. Definitely put most of your money in the backyard.

A Novel way which. I was surprised that works, was to transform the Garage Door. Make it look like two hinged doors By surface mounting the wide hinge plates like you see on the antigue wrought iron hinges. I suggest a set of three, add two wide pull type handles. You may want to also add where a key would go above or below the left handle, a long straight bar to represent a key bar. Below this on the left end one can place a nice set of house numbers. All can be done in black or matching colour. As an extra can place lights on the side pillars, perhaps the ones that shine up and down to compliment the height of the house. The upstairs windows can receive side shutters. I would also be temted to add a Panel in the centre between the windows. Where the front door is build a set of two long planter boxes instead of a fence. This can be in the form of bench tops with recessed troughs for plants.

I'd also recommend windows with four panes instead of solid glass and maybe shutters? Window planter boxes under the upstairs windows filled with some colorful flowers or ivy might add some charm. You might also consider some big planters with beautiful plants around the driveway to take the focus off the house. Ivy growing up the garage wall would look nice as well. What is hanging from the front porch? Can you take it off and put a trellis with vines like wisteria on it?

Other ideas:
Narrowed your driveway and dedicated more of the yard to garden.
Change the driveway to blacktop or some sort of paver or stone.
Change the roof to a less drab color. Maybe a dark red or dark green shingle?

I would add dark shutters on both windows and paint the garage door the color of the roof.
