A sad commentary on some people!

While Bulldogs are not generally known to be long lived, my last girl lived to age 13.

I still miss her five years later.

That is very sad. My friend growing up had a pug and when the dog turned 8 years old, her parents had the dog put down, saying it was too old. So very sad. Those people should not be allowed to have any more pets.

this attitude is unforgivable. with the advent of breed specific rescues available and with many of these rescues offering special homes for senior dogs, there is NO excuse for this.

i hope none of their children ever become an inconvenience. ugh!

So sad for that poor dog,like Nina said she should have reached out to someone for help. You can only hope this person(heartless) will never put another animal through a miserable life. Stories like this piss me off to...

I hope what she did eats at her. I will never see her again as a "sweet" person.

This person would no longer be in my life, and I would tell her exactly why.

Ugh, what a horrible thing to do! Such a cold and heartless thing to do when there are other options. Every breed of dog has a "rescue" group that will take these dogs and find them loving homes. To just put the dog down because you are tired of it is just beyond cold.

Why would a vet agree to that?

Why indeed? Our vets (a group practice) really pushed for a surgery on my 16 year old dog who had a huge abdominal tumor and heart murmur. I wanted to treat her as a hospice patient because their plan was to cut her open and if they could remove the tumor they would, if not euthanize her on the table. There was also a significant chance that if they could remove the tumor she would develop a fatal heart arrhythmia in the post-op period. But having a long history of paying whatever it takes for my dogs they saw dollar signs and two of the vets really pushed for the surgery even though would not give me any odds on her survival. One vet from the group (after my dog died at home) told me I did the right thing and told me my dog never would have survived the surgery.

So my best guess is the vet who euthanized the dog believed (correctly) that the owners would not put any money into treating the dog. So he took the low road. Or maybe he feared they would dump the dog on the street, or take care of their "problem" them self if he didn't.

On a side note my oldest dog was just diagnosed with a grade 2 heart murmur and slightly enlarged heart. Thinking the future holds me waterproofing the furniture and doggy diapers if he ever needs Lasix for treatment. He's crying right now. Not in pain- I am on the computer and am late in taking him for a walk. lol

I'm in rescue and there are a lot of people that shouldn't have pets. You can't fix callousness and stupidity. The vet is responsible - an Oath of Office is required by the profession. I would call the vet and ask about the practice's policy. I would describe a dog with similar issues and ask if they would kill it. If the answer is yes, I would immediately discuss it with the vet and get answers. If that wasn't satisfactory, I would blast it on FB and everywhere else. You might even be able to file a complaint with the Board of Veterinarians. These actions will help you because you would be bringing attention to the biggest problem - the vet who has an Oath.

This thread just broke my heart and left me speechless. I mean why?? Just why would she do this???

I have two bulldogs- one of my boys was re-homed to us at 13 months because his previous owner got tired of all the cleaning, and shedding. I thought it was ridiculous. But after reading this, I just want to call them up and say "thank you for not doing anything stupid!!"

Just the thought that someone is capable of this, and the vet agreed to it.. well, it blows mind.

I would love to know the name of the vet, (as well the woman but I doubt you'll share that) so I can blast them all over social media. This is just not acceptable, on any level.

I think you should take the woman in and have her put down.

I assume she gave you all the details of why she put the dog down and there was no really validating reason?? If that's the case, that's just awful. And should weigh on the vet's conscious as well who did this to the dog. But perhaps, there was something else wrong with the dog that she didn't mention? We can only hope so.. because killing a dog out of laziness should be punishable.

The dog was peeing in the house. So without doing any tests on the dog such as a UA to rule out infection, the decision was made by this woman to put the dog down. And she absolutely knew that a UTI was possible and there are tests to diagnose this and medication to treat it.

The woman is overwhelmed with family issues (I don't have much sympathy with her pattern of poor choices) and the dog was just one more hassle in her life. She has justified her decision by stating the dog must have had a terminal condition. That is of course a ridiculous statement made by this educated woman because the dog was full of energy, playful and loved to eat. She did tell me she did not want to spend money on any vet treatments. His terminal condition was having her as an owner.

Still disgusted but can't avoid her.

This is making me so angry!! Our beloved old dog is on his last legs and I would give just about anything if he only had a couple minor, treatable health conditions.

Petra- So sorry your furbaby is suffering from old age. Please remember that you have done a wonderful job in caring for him because he has lived to be old. I know that doesn't make it easier. Sending prayers for your little buddy.

I'm with Aviolet6, why would a vet agree to the euthanasia?

I had a dear friend who planned to have her cat euthanized because it peed all over her house and nothing my friend did could stop the problem. Kitty was declared healthy by our mutual vet. My friend had an animal behaviorist out to her house to help with Kitty. The peeing didn't stop. She told me she had an appointment with our vet to have Kitty euthanized.

The next evening she arrived at my house in tears. Kitty was now gone but, get this, she also had her DOG euthanized at the same time because, "I don't want the responsibility any more".

Oh my God!

The dog was friendly, only about 8 years old and had I known she was planning on having the dog euthanized I would have gladly taken it into my family!

It was as if my friend decided as long as we're getting rid of the cat we might as well make it a two-for and put the dog down too!

Her decision haunts me to this day. I would SO have adopted her dog. I had no clue she was going to do this. She never complained about that dog. I had such a hard time consoling her over her "loss" because I did not agree with what she did.

And I have to wonder what went through our vet's head to euthanize a perfectly healthy dog simply because the owner "didn't want the responsibility".

Another who is surprised vet agreed to this. Don't they generally contact the ASPCA or equal agency to save the dog's life? I hope that person never owns a dog again.

Bossyvossy- I don't think so. I had a neighbor who put down three healthy dogs all at once and no one stopped her. Not even the vet.

Anyways...having a bad week. My oldest dog has been diagnosed with a bulging disk in his back now. Rest and meds. He doesn't do well with anesthesia so surgery down the road seems out of the question. He is not in visible pain but our lives have changed again. I have to make new doggie steps for the couch and my bed is now a mattress on the floor to prevent him from jumping onto the bed. Hubby is sleeping in the guest room on the comfy bed.

Worst thing ever is my buddy cannot take the long walks he lives for (and may never again). The youngest dog is confused regarding the safety gate in the living room.

Poor baby! Some people are sorry excuses of a human being. She forgets that she may grow old one day with no one to care for her. She's lucky if she'll be in good health and placed in a good home. Her POA or next of kin just may pull the plug on one of her good "happy" days.

Some people should only have fluffy toys that do not feel pain or love their owners. I fell out once with someone online who had her cat put down as it was developing diabetes and she said she could not affor d meds for it. She immediately sent out emails to all her contacts that she had adopted another kitty... Disposable pets...
