About to (re)paint my kitchen cupboards

I am at the cleaning stage of painting my kitchen cupboards, and trying to do an inexpensive refresh before my daughter's wedding in August.

My cupboards are currently a light grey and sage green. They always look dirty, and I'm just done with the color combo. I an so sick and tired of them after 10+ years. My countertops (which will be replaced in the not to distant future, but after the wedding) are a grey /black/white formica speckle. My back splash is an art project I did with my kids with food container labels, some antiquing stain, and 10 coats of polyurethane. That will be changed when I get my new countertop.

So for now, I'm primarily doing the painting of the cupboards, and dining area walls, (there previously was a chair rail that has been removed), changing the cupboard with no doors into a cupboard with drawers, and possibly changing the overhead light fixture.

This is a one last fix, as I am saving for a gut job of the kitchen in about 5 years, so no rearranging of cupboards, floor plan or windows, just a pickup and freshen before the wedding.

I had picked out SW Friendly Yellow (6680) for the dining room walls, and the wall space above the kitchen cupboards, as well as the bank of cupboards by the refrigerator. I had picked out SW Daphne (9151) for the remaining kitchen cupboards. I am having a window treatment, either a Roman shade, or valance for the kitchen window, as well as recovering the chair cushions with the yellow and blue fabric.

I have always loved yellow and blue kitchens, but as the painting time approaches I am wondering if I have made a mistake in my color selections. I have purchased the yellow paint, but the base for the blue is on order, so I'm not stuck with that yet. And I really really hate white cupboards.

Please pardon the mess, as I am in the middle of this project. Also the kitchen is pretty bright..south facing windows, but the cell phone pics make it look darker than it is.

So, I'm asking, what do you think about the colors? Any advice for a future countertop and or backsplash? Lighting fixture suggestions?

Agree with Main Line. I would use paint the cabinets all blue.

I would use one color on the cabinets. Since you already have the yellow paint I think you should use it and then reconsider that shade of blue. There should not be base board attached to cabinets. I really like the fabric choice.

First off, I love your stove! I bet lots of great cooking gets done in that kitchen. :)

How does the blue you chose look with your counter top? Even though you will be changing it in the near future you still want your kitchen too look its nicest during the time of your daughters wedding.

Thanks for the compliment on the stove. We love it. And we use it a lot. It is not a showpiece, it is a Workhorse. As for the blue, I looked at about 30 different color swatches of blue before narrowing it down to 4, then I had posters painted with samples of the paint, which I hung on the cupboard doors for several days so I could see it in the different light. The general consensus among people I asked is that the shade of blue that I picked out, Daphne, looks good with the fabric, as well as looking good with the countertop, even though looking good with the countertop wasn't my first priority. But yes I understand what you're saying about wanting everything to look good, even though the countertop is temporary

I'm wondering now if I should paint just the lower cabinets with the blue, and paint the rest of them with the yellow. I hate when I start to second-guess myself

Love blue and yellow! Such a bright combo. I would go with all the same color cabinets.

Will you cry when you pull out the kids' homemade backsplash? I would. Not saying I wouldn't replace it, but I would cry, too. :)

There is a lot going on in that kitchen so I would stick to one colour on the cabinets.

Yeah. My husband and I were talking about that exact thing last night, as I was getting all teary eyed at the thought of getting rid of that project. It was a cheap fun way to do a backsplash, and the kids loved going to the store and picking out bright colorful labels. (and trying new foods in the bargain)

Your original plan sounds perfect: yellow walls and refrigerator cabinets, blue cabinets elsewhere. This would probably be a good time to edit the things on display. It's a lovely kitchen with personality and energy. Please post photos when you finish.

You might be able to keep a portion of your backsplash and have it framed or used on a tray or as a table or something.

I'm Leaning more towards one color. I love the blue for the cabinets, but am nervous it'll be too dark. Guess I'll just have to try it on one cupboard and see

I think this is a great plan. Nice colors, *wonderful* fabric to build around. I guess you paint over the backsplash until it's time to replace the counters? Anyway, that will reduce the feeling of chaos a lot.

This is going to be a happy, sunny space. Show us a pic when you're done!

Are you going for a Swedish Carl Larsson look?

@apple pie order..thanks for the encouragement. And...lol..yess editing is part of this process. Thank you for reminding me of that.

@apple pie order...I actually have some Carl Larsson prints that I have considered putting on that long blank dining area wall. I am swedish, and have always loved that look.

    Love the fabric!

You might want to spend a bit of time looking at the Larsson kitchen paintings and your prints. Their blues are a lot lighter than your blue paint chip (online, anyway). Maybe adding a lighter yellow, two shades up on the yellow chip card, would be worth sampling on foamcore along with the blue sample (I mean use two colors of yellow, not replacing the current yellow with a differnt one). Drape the fabric over the foamcore sample boards for a few days.

love the fabric, love the kitchen in all blue, and yellow for the walls! With some white trim here and there. I think it will look fabulous! Then I would do white beadboard all the way up for the backsplash -- crisp clean looking! Please post when finished!

@Lori...I love your idea for white bead board for the backsplash! The kitchen window is on the list for replacement, too, and I was looking at one with white trim.

I have been stuck on the idea of tile for the backsplash, even tho I'm not a tile fan. Never thought of the beadboard for the kitchen....lol, I have it in my bathroom and just love it!!

I think when painted cabinets are paired with a neutral white (marble like quarts), butcher block, grey, or black (soapstone) counters it looks lovely. I would also keep it simple with your backsplash by either continuing counter material or using simple subway or penny tile. I love the blue and yellow combo and your fabric is very pretty. Good luck!

    Also thought this was interesting...

My favorite is the yellow cabinets with light blue wall color:)
