Good question. Many paint lines have "historic" color collections, but I don't find them that helpful. Remember, you're not living in a period stage set. I think it's better to get a color scheme that you love. Pretty house!

You may not be thrilled with some of the colors from the 1920s--cloying pastels in some colonial revivals, earth tones in the homes of the Craftsman era, dull and ugly greyed shades. In your shoes, I'd go with whatever works for you and your style. FWIW I live in a 1916 house, and we have found some really ugly paint colors here and there.

I like your house, but it doesn't fit into any of those neat little architectural categories--bungalow, colonial revival, Tudor etc. often associated with the era.

I've uncovered some very strange colors and patterns in my 1923 home, including a dark red ceiling in the living room. My colors are all over the place because three people have been choosing colors. For example, my teenage daughter's room is black and silver with trim color matching the rest of the house.

Can you peel off some layers of paint in an inconspicuous area to see what had been used? However, I agree, paint the interior a color you like and that best shows off your folk art collection.

We found when doing research on historical homes; the colors seen when peeling back layers are not accurate. Paint and wall coverings often faded over time leaving colors looked muted. The golden yellows and grey blues we find were once bright and bold.

That said I agree homes are not static, but evolve even in prior times. Honor the tradition of a home by the use of color and furnishing that make inviting to live in and visit.
