need layout advice, please.

Hi all: I'm struggling with the layout for the kitchen in my new abode. Construction on the small apartment/house (it's one half of a duplex, customized for me alone; the other half will be used for guests...invited family and friend plus perhaps some vacation renters). A couple of things to note: The house is in Spain, where appliances, etc. are configured in centimeters (60 cm is roughly 24") and some appliances are different sizes than in the U.S. Fridges, for example, are typically only 60 cm. wide and deep (counter depth), but very tall. And ovens and cooktops are typically 60 cm. wide as well. (Not sure how I'm gonna fit the 20 lb. Thanksgiving turkey in that!) .

I've attached a sketch with my first crack at a plan, but I'm not particularly happy with it. Not sure if centering the cooktop and hood on the stretch of countertop against the wall is more important than maximizing uninterrupted counter working space, for example. Or if I should give up the larger sink And I can't think of anything better to do with the narrow space near the window than to stack the tall stuff on both sides there and hope to make it attractive by doing something interesting with the window and the wall below it. The space is really just too small , but it's what I've got to work with. The whole apartment is in facts small (tiny by U.S. standards ...500 sq. feet), and i've already wrung as much space from dining, living and bedroom areas as possible. It's essentially now one big open space to take advantage of the spectacular sea view out of large floor to ceiling doors at the front of the dining and living area spaces.. Note that I can't change the footprint of the house at all ...any of the thicker outside walls marked on the plan.

Would really appreciate the advice of all you seasoned pros!

Thanks!

Your sink version will not work. You will need to step to your right every time you need to open the dishwasher. Plus you have the DW right next to your cooktop and then you have a huge expanse of counter between your cooktop and oven.

The way we normally work is to bring food from the fridge to the sink, and then we prep between the sink and the cooktop. You want your counter space to be where you prep.

So with that in mind, I moved your DW out of your prep space to the right of your sink. I moved your cooktop down a bit.

Thanks cpartist: You're right of course. The way you've got it now is much closer to the original way I had it planned, and then died the cooktop needed to be centered on that long wall. Should have known better than to let the "look" dictate the placement. I am thinking that I'd need to switch the blind corner cab opening to the other leg of the L...no room to open it now. But then perhaps I can move the sink and dw a bit tower wall and keep a little bit of an overhang at the end of the peninsula. I'd really like to be able to sit at the counter to do prep work sometimes.

Thoughts from any others out there? I KNOW this can still be improved, I just am not sure how!

I agree with cpartist's assessment and layout. You'll need either a DW cabinet, or a DW return, to support the countertop on the right side, which will add a few inches to that run. You might not have much space available for an overhang. Buena suerte, and please come back and show us the finished kitchen.

Metric kitchens are a challenge for me, but I'm wondering if a narrow galley with all your fixtures on one side and shallow cabs on the opposite would work well in your space. Here's an inspiration pic of such a layout:

Here's a layout in an ikea metric planner. The oven/mw high cab was sacrificed for just an oven/hob base cab with the idea a small microwave might fit on a shelf.

ETA: the inspiration photo above is the mirror of the DIY with ADD blog's kitchen photo. It's difficult to find photos of it now since I don't think she maintains the blog anymore, but I did find the floor plan so you can compare to your space if you're curious. Of course, a DW between sink and cooktop is a no no around here...
