It would probably depend on what kind of ants you have there. I was able to identify my ants by getting one on a piece of scotch tape, bringing it inside and doing a search for ants in my state. Once you know what they are, you can learn how they live and how likely they are to cause trouble.

I would never call you wimpy. I appreciate your respect for living things. There is no shortage of ants in the world, so if they are going to hurt you (like mine BITE and STINK) or damage your property, you could arrange for them to move out (whatever it takes).

Socks, the ant hill is about the width of a platter and maybe 8-inches high. I was thinking of taking a shovel, scooping it up into a bucket and then moving it to the rear portion of my property. Is this a viable thing to do?

Over the weekend, I did the "scooping" thing that I mentioned above. Didn't go as smoothly as I would have hoped, as the mound was firm, making it difficult to execute a smooth, quick scoop. I'm sure a few died in the process. So, I scooped in segments and then moved what I lifted near the back edge of my property. Hopefully they will simply rebuild their mound and resume their normal, day to day ant lives. Thanks to those who responded to my question.

Some ant colonies not only got deep but go away from the center mound it really depends on the species. The mound you described really sounds like a fire ant mound but in truth it could be one of any species.
