Is there any chance you could take another picture with better lighting? I would say you should find another place for lamp near window.

The photo is rubbish but the furniture piece looks like a worthy experiment. The proportion of the crown molding is a little off but it's an interesting piece. If Hubs doesn't like it you could sell it as art furniture. Look at Custommade.com and don't give up.

Can your husband at least say what he does or doesn't like? the color? the weathering? the gilding? or just the whole piece?? you could go a lot of ways with this to happy result...

It's not the lamp so much as the cord.

No problem. Because the torn off parts of the gold are so noticeable and distinct, what about a colored wax, etc. to tone down the distressed/ aged look? Neutral brown or bronze or teal ....

Picture is much better. Ruby, can you explain the cord coming out from wall? I thought it was a light a cord from lamp.
Also, why the skull? A bit of humor, perhaps? I think it's a nice piece. Perhaps some colorful pottery and maybe a light would brighten up the corner. If you have a floor plant, try putting that along side the furniture piece. Without seeing the rest of your decor it's hard to tell what else would fit. Maybe your husband doesn't like the skull! LOL

The light cord from the wall was Photoshopping a lamp out of the picture. The skull was as you say a bit of humour. I think the plant idea is good. It may detract from it a bit which is good. Also the suggestion of coloured wax is one that I will try . Thankyou

Its a challenging space. We hired Elle Miller Design just last month for our living room...very pleased. All online too. However, in your space you could use a plant/tree..or a table designed in that triangle-shape then put candles on it.

Hi Ruby, I think your cabinet is cute! It's kind of hard to tell how it should look in context to the room because we can't really see the rest of the room. I do like the shape though and were you are going with it but I think you could go just a bit further with this. The finish looks like it could benefit from an antiquing wax such as Bri wax. The front panel is ok; I think it could also use more! It's a good start; I would add some outrageous, large decoupaged flowers right over the gold in a scattered pattern. Not sure I like the red heart on the left.

Kind of like this. But let the gold and green show through; don't cover it all up. Then pick a color from your decoupaged pictures and paint the inside of your cabinet so it relates to the bottom half of your cabinet.

I know I'm late to the show but I think it's lovely. It's one of my favorite colors so that helps. Keep it and enjoy it.

Coming in late too but did scan above comments. It is a creative work of art. Would your husband tell you a painting you did was rubbish and belongs in the garbage? If so, the decision is up to you - you are the artist. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I think your treatment of the cabinet is beautiful. I would like to see some gold leaf somewhere up at the top of the piece for continuity. Also, I'm not feeling the red heart knob but of course that is just my opinion!

And yes, the piece needs to fit in the design scheme of the room in some way.............perhaps that is really your husbands objection?

Thanks for your kind comments visualizemaven. I have now replaced the red heart with a smaller cream one and have put some gold leaf at the top to balance it out. It's so helpful to have all these comments. I have moved it into a more suitable setting. I think it looks great in the kitchen with the little pearl cream tagines in it and the funny donkey that I bought from Prague many years ago. My husband even likes what I've put in the bottom of it , sherry and gin ; )

Yes, I'd think the gold will shine through even with wax... I haven't been reading sorry but Michael's sells in spray paint aisle.

I think it's interesting in a good way! For me there is slightly too much going on with the gold and the dark distressed spots together. I would have preffered it without the gold or with more even blue color and the gold.

I would leave it alone. If you keep overworking it you'll grow to dislike it. You are the artist, you'll know when you are done. Don't let others make you second guess yourself.
