Not-homey-feeling great room

Hello! I'm having a hard time "completing" the great room in our house. Because of the tall ceilings and windows, I feel like the room still feels pretty stark and incomplete. Need some advice on how to fill it up and make it flow without it becoming cluttered. Thank you!!

I think it is because it is set up beautifully, but without purpose. You are looking at the stairs. No fireplace, no view, no tv. Generally a living room is oriented toward some focal point.

My thought is to move the chair so it is angled toward the sofa. Pull the end table up so it is on the same plane as the sofa (it's too far back.) And add a chair at the other end of the sofa also angled in. This way, you have a conversation grouping, so you don't feel like you are looking at nothing. You are now looking at your guests.

You need to add a few more photos to see more of the space, can't really see the layout. The window wall is painted a darker accent color which will always just go black when the sun is shining. That needs to be repainted in a lighter color.

This is what happens when i ask my husband to take pics for me :) but all the walls are the same color.

I assume it doesn't work to place the sofa so it looks out that gorgeous window?

I am also inclined to suggest another lamp, maybe a floor lamp at the other end of the sofa. That and the above suggestion.

That is a nice space, I think some large wood pieces of some sort would warm it up and add some coziness

It is really hard to get a feel for your room from the dark photos. Can we see all four sides? Can you move the furniture so you are looking at the view, not the stairs?

Get rid of the bench with the pillows and the plant. Put some kind of a narrow cabinet or shelving unit there and add some framed photos, Luminara candles, books. The room looks too impersonal.

I think that your sofa is in a good position, on the wall where it is now; it would seem to be a good position in terms of Feng Shui, generally speaking. But considering the view that you have from the sofa - you could try placing the sofa on the wall by the stairs - where you have the bench now - and see how it feels to you there. If you can see the beautiful view from that vantage point - that might work better for you; it might really be the best position for your space. You can try it, and see how it feels.

If you decide that you prefer sofa on the current wall - some things you could do:

Bring in a tall plant (real or good quality faux/silk) and place in area to left of windows (not necessarily this tall, but to demonstrate).

Maybe more along height of this - or a little taller.

I think some plants in the room would be beneficial - generally speaking - to bring nature/green indoors. This would be the main plant addition/position for your current sofa placement.

You could bring in an electric fireplace feature - for area where bench is (instead of bench). Many possible styles/designs for this... Something along these lines might be interesting.

Alternatively, you could do a water feature/fountain in that space.

You could use a piece with stained glass, instead of the art on the staircase.

Generally, I would use white pillows on the sofa. Larger and fewer pillows than what you have now - and white only. This would provide light and contrast to all the dark elements in the room, and also complement your chandelier.

I would also suggest a large piece of rock crystal for center of the coffee table.
