What do I do with this cupboards in this kitchen corner?

We recently installed a door, and are now redoing our kitchen. There is 50" between the sink and the wall and 17" to the door frame from the door frame. We need this door to be functional, but I am not sure what to do with the cupboards.
Our kitchen guy (not a designer) suggested the design below, but I don't think this will leave me with enough counter space, as I would like this to be our coffee area.
