Kitty Litter Strength?

last modified: 10 years ago

I bought some Special Kitty litter and soaked a handful in water for a day. It seemed to turn to sludge, except for the larger pieces. The larger pieces held their shape, but broke under strong pressure (pinched between fingers).

Assuming this meant the kitty litter was too weak, I went looking for some Oil-Dri (no Turface nearby). I found a bag that was ripped and tried crushing the dry pieces between my fingers. It broke with about the same amount of pressure, so I decided to give the kitty litter another go. This time I rinsed it well to get rid of the finer particles. I'm going to let it soak for a week this time and see how it holds up.

Is it normal for clay products like kitty litter and Oil-Dri to be able to be crushed in the hand? They don't turn to mush or powder, but they definitely break into smaller pieces. Do they still hold up for container use?
