Try your city or county vector control.

We used to pick them up at our city hall, but last time I called vector control, they said they would deliver them to me.

I just talked to Pasadena Tropical Fish on the phone, and they say they do have them. You could call and reconfirm. Not exactly in your back yard, but in case you do come to Pasadena. (You could make a day out of it, Huntington Garden visit and lunch, pick up fish at the end of the day.)

Some plant nurseries stock them. I thought they were too pricey though. I buy the fathead/rosy red minnows feeder fish from the pet store instead. They run about 10-14 cents each, look nice in the pond and do the job.

Thanks Jim, I called the county vector and they didn't have any, but were expecting some on Thursday and would call me for delivery. I had planned on picking them up thinking I would just get a few for my half whiskey barrel pond.

Socks how many did they deliver to you? You gave me a good plan,lol! It would have worked out 2 Saturdays from now as my CRFG group has a field trip to the Huntington Library, unfortunately I won't be able to go :-(

I received about six when I picked them up for free at a pond store. Now I have a zillion.

Once I bought the minnows at a petstore. They didn't last, either they died or the raccoons got them. My computer crashed so I am not able to fully search but I did look in the yellow pages for ponds and not much was listed. I might go to the store where I previously bought the minnows and add them to a container I have lotus growing. I saw mosquito larvae so added pieces of mosquito dunk.

Unfortunately, raccoons will happily eat mosquito fish, too. They also tend to destroy plants in their pursuit, dang them. I have kept the minnows in my preform pond for quite a few years, adding more if they start to get depleted. I know some eggs hatch, because I occasionally see the babies swimming around. While at a former house, one year the feeders offered were zebrafish. Surprisingly, those also survived multiple years in the pond, even though low night temperatures could get down to 30 degrees F.

Yes, raccoons have eaten the mosquito fish also and destroyed my waterlilies, but I now have this chicken-wired, metal panel that they haven't been able to remove, yet.

Eloise, it looks like you have goldfish in there. If that's still true, you don't need any mosquito fish, the goldfish do a fine job of eating mosquitoes. I am not a fan of mosquito fish, they breed way too fast and get really crowded. Plus they're not pretty. Goldfish are way more beautiful.

BarbJP, thanks for the info on golfish. Yesterday I stopped by the store where once before I bought minnows. They didn't have any, but the guy did say some use goldfish in place of mosquito fish. I don't mind the color of mosquito fish and I do want to add some to a container with lotus.

I have fond memories of mosquito fish. They would tickle our fingers when we reached in. I loved the patterns the school made when they swam. I didn't know raccoons would go after a fish that small.

Yep, raccoons will go after them; that's how they destroyed my waterlilies and water hyacinths. I have not been able to get any mosquitofish, yet. I called the Co. Vector office two days ago, and they still don't have any. Through Craigslist a place in Santa Barbara has some, but it's really not worth the drive. I don't understand if they multiple like crazy, why it's so hard to find a few! Meanwhile, I have goldfish, but I just need to remind myself not too feed them often so they will eat the larvae.
