too bad but doesn't look fully dead yet - maybe send it to someone in a warmer climate?

It's only mostly dead. It would be free to a good home, but has been out of the ground for a few hours now.

My condolences. We have all been there.

Not 'Ogon', but was a bit surprised to see my two straight-species DRs hanging in there up in Z4. One in particular has put on quite a bit of height while I haven't been paying attention. Maybe tougher than first thought.

Man, nice roots though!

I think that tree would have been fine by next year..unless of course you're saying that every year it just gets punished...1 step forward, 2 steps backward each year.

yes which illustrates the point I'm always making about climate and plant tolerance, since the area they come from now is no colder than 7b and probably more like 8b...but would have been colder in the last ice age.

That's exactly what happens. It was planted in 2013 and has yet to make it through a winter without significant injury. This past winter was fairly mild, which is why I've given up. I haven't tried a seedling, but doubtful I'll revisit this one anytime soon.

Thats a shame. You know, I use Crepe Myrtles which die back most years.

Wonder if you have a spot where an Ogon which you just cut back to the ground every winter could be used.

Sorry for your loss, Maackia :(. Will Metasequoias sprout after being cut, Tornado?

In the cities the Ogon's seem the be hanging on (I know of 3 in Bloomington, Woodbury and South Saint Paul). My species here in Bloomington suffered a little during the polar vortex year but has recovered. Time will tell.

Cuttings?
