I love the purple Hopseed / dodonea, for its looks and for the fast growth. I'm in zone 9 / Sunset 17, Crescent City and I've planted them along one side fence border. We have a problem here with nurseries, as in lack of...and when I got my dodoneas, HD had 5 in 5 gallon size. They've done their thing and grown quickly, been in the ground two years now and the first Winter was rather mild here. Having waited for HD to hopefully get more in 5 gallon and they didn't, I picked up 6 in one gallon size to put in between, staggered heights, but that's okay. However, this last Winter was really a lot colder and 4 of the 6 small ones did not make it. I cannot say for sure that it was the hard frost, because we' just realized that Verticillium Wilt is on thhe property and that may be what led to their demise. The 5 gallon sized ones are fine I've used the dodoneas for years, also in SoCal...but never in tree form, so I'm not sure about that.

Tall and slender sounds like.a good place for Silver Sheen pittosporum, though it has a more airy effect than you might want....maybe not blocking as much visual. I believe it may be hardy to your zone....I'm looking for something else to fill in with my dodoneas also and finding for myself that with their coloring and shape, that it may be hard for me to think of other choices that will look right with the dodoneas, so maybe someone else will chime in with some answers. I have melaleuca squarrosas that I would like to use, but think the contrast between them and the dodonea would be too stark.

I like the green dodoneas randomly mixed with the purple in a hedge. Have considered purple leaf plum trees? White buddleias limbed up? Mahonia? Chilopsis?

I like that idea also, have done that before ...green dodoneas mixed with the purple, color variation without being too MUCH contrast and foliage being the same.
