Thimbles - Finger protection for hand sewing ????

Having not done much hand sewing in my life - I never mastered the art of using a thimble. Now that I am binding quilts by hand - I'm seeing a definite need for something. I've only tried a metal thimble on my third finger and find it to be totally awkward. But after finishing my last one - my fingers were so sore. I guess I've just not done enough hard labor to toughen my hide. I've looked in the stores and watched a few videos - but just not getting the hang of it. Any suggestions for products you've found to work the best for you - or just general ideas to get more accustomed to having something on my fingers. I would like to eventually hand-stitch a quilt - but until I can master this part - I won't be trying the whole shebang! Help!!!!!

Go to a thrift store and look for leather gloves, the dress kind ladies used to wear. Then cut off a finger of the glove and use it as a thimble. If too big, you can roll the edge down like a cuff and tack it. I get ten thimbles to a pair and have several pairs in the drawer for backup. They are soft and comfortable and stay in place well. That's all I use.

I have used several and the one I like best is Clover's - Protect & Grip Thimble.
It has soft stretchy, rubbery stuff for the finger with a metal cap to push the needle.

Available at JoAnns, Walmart, K-Mart, etc.

I use something like this, sounds like similar to what glassquilt uses.

Some of the videos I've seen use this one and it does seem more user friendly. The leather glove idea might be worth having available as well. I just hate to spend a lot trying to find just the right thing - and have a collection of unusable tools - when I could buy more fabric instead. lol

Love my leather thimble, covers whole finger with a bit of elastic over knuckle. I forget I have it on, it is so comfortable.
