I once sent her fat quarters from a local shop. When she visited me in April, I took her to that shop and she bought fabric and made this lap quilt for me (she selected and designed).

Very pretty! So many choices for gifts. Anything quilt related would be fine.

Check out some online quilt shops and see what they have available for quilting gifts. There are some really neat things out there. Clocks, jewelry, mugs. t-shirts.......she probably already has all the quilting supplies she uses so maybe something more personal but still quilty related???? Of course, it depends what you want to spend! Fat quarters...ALWAYS fun. Or you could maybe get 3 different 1 yard cuts of some coordinating fabrics and send her a link to '3 yard quilts'. My sister gave me a couple of things that I LOVE: one is a 'SewEasy' cutter...Wow...what a tool! and then there is a small cutting mat that rotates...another amazing tool. Hey, even thread! I love a 'collection' of threads - you never have enough.. connecting threads . com (runthatalltogether) sells quilting thread 'sets' that are very cool. oh the list goes on. Please let us know what you pick!! Obviously, this gal can do wonders with fat quarters!!!!!

I'll go against the trend here, and say send her something not quilty. Most of us like to do other things besides quilt! :)

Does she like to read? Does she collect anything in particular? Maybe send her something pretty for her house.

The reason I say that is because she probably has all the tools and such that she needs. If not, tools should be chosen by the user - there are different brands and styles of things and it's a personal choice what will work best for you.

It sounds like you want something more personal than a gift card, but that's another route you could go. Then she can get what she wants. :)

Maybe you can send her some of those quilting items that when we look at them we think "Really? That's really not a necessity. Who would spend money on that?" but we secretly want them anyway. lol Maybe make her a basket with a few fat quarters, a quilting tool or two, maybe some magazines, bubble bath, coffee stuff...Kind of a I know you like to quilt and relax basket? :)

When she visited, she worked on pieces at night, but her squares, thread and scissors (small, due to airline rules) were in a plastic bag. Does anyone know of a good portable, lightweight bag for such purpose? Perhaps with a safe pocket for scissors and needle, with a flat place for squares?

I just did a quick Google search of "quilter's travel case" and about a thousand came up! There are many styles and sizes to choose from.

Hopefully someone who has a travel case they really love will chime in and give you some guidance. :)

The quilt shop she uses doesn't have online GC options. I can call them. She also is experimenting with printing her own fabric with Spoonflower and they have GCs.

No GC options then get a visa prepaid card. As for a TSA approved small sewing kit, well, most anyone who sees can tell you they barely cut one piece of thread. She could make her own small kit and send it ahead using the "if it fits, it ships" from the USPS. Then she has tools that she knows and knows they work. BUT there is another option. I believe she can bring her tools as long as they are in her luggage and CHECKED as is not in cabin area. I have included the link to TSA prohibited items.
