This is a client's kitchen in Newport Beach, California that was as old as the home itself and in desperate need of updating. Our client is a low matinence, no frills kind of woman (which I love) and really wanted a simple design with an island instead of the current peninsula layout. She had spoken with a couple of contractors prior to hiring us who told her there wasn't enough room for an island. This was an awesome opportunity to show a client the advantage of hiring an interior designer instead of just a contractor. With a few adjustments, a little time, and some expert space planning we produced a simple, but beautiful design that fit the lifestyle of our client perfectly and of course, she got her island.

DESIGNER TIPS:

• Take your backsplash up and around your kitchen window. It gives a high-end and finished look without much extra cost.
• If your home is on the smaller side and you don't want to chop up your flooring when you get to the kitchen area, it's ok to continue your hardwood flooring. Warping is almost never an issue as long as you don't let puddles sit on your kitchen floor. Hardwood can really add warmth to the kitchen area where there is a lack of softer furnishings and fabrics.
• Add an island for better flow; it doesn't have to be huge to still be extremely functional.
• This client originally got stock cabinetry quoted from Home Depot. I was shocked at the price and told her we could re-do her kitchen in custom cabinetry for the same price using a local cabinet shop, and we did! Don't assume that big box retailers will be less expensive than local carpenters. And as a rule of thumb it's always good to get at least 2 bids, but be open about the process and let everyone know you are interviewing multiple contractors/subs.
