Silver mirrored nightstands could nicely contrast the dark color and compliment the gray wall color above. Good-sized lamps on the nightstands instead of the wall lamps could look good as well. I would suggest a larger mirror above the dresser and lighter colored items on the display shelves.

Some art on the walls would really perk up the space and I agree the wall lights look like a cheap hotel room

I would strongly suggest artwork on the wall, vertical over the bed, and given the neutral tones of the room and that your son is one of your guests, I would go for a landscape or other outdoor scene, adding a bit of color in a setting that can get too . . . neutral. I don't think the swing lamps make it look like a cheap hotel room. I think the issue is they just can't hold their own without surrounding wall art and nightstand accessories. :)

Michelle, even if this is a guest room, it's still in your house. What is your taste in art? I can see traditional and modern pictures working, but it would be best to narrow your target a bit before going hunting. And then I'd look for peaceful images. As for sizes, as below I suggest three pieces in these sizes.
