Is special care required with white farmhouse sink? Are they difficult to maintain?

Shaw's Original owner...two actually. HATE. THEM. BOTH. Chosen by a *designer*---BIG MISTAKE-- I went along because I liked the aesthetic. One is in the main kitchen, smaller one in the laundry area. Can live with the one in the laundry area; all I do in it is soak things in bleach or laundry potions, so naturally it still is gleaming new after four years. The kitchen area sink is hideous IN SPITE of the grid in the bottom. My farm house is on an actual FARM and my sink WORKS HARD. I'm building another home and will NEVER use a fireclay beauty queen sink again. I am opting for a stainless model that works and looks good too. As for belt buckles...everyone in MY kitchen wears an APRON! lol Fireclay sinks are for people who don't actually COOK in their kitchens or who own stock in SOFT SCRUB and don't mind ruining their mani.

White porcelain sinks mark up very easily. Keep that in mind when you are deciding on the material of your farm house sink. Farm house style sinks are also available in other materials including metals which can be easier ot maintain than the porcelain sink shown.

hmmm. Like the stainless too but was told the apron of the farm sink scratches very easily on the stainless model (belt buckles, etc). Thanks for your input!

They're no more difficult to maintain than any other porcelain sink...
...there's just more of it.

never had porcelain before -- just stainless. Will I be afraid to put anything in it?

I have a Shaw's Original Farmhouse sink. I dreamed of this sink for years, it's beautiful. However, it does not drain very well. I waste too much water trying to use the sprayer to wash dark liquids down the drain; if I let red wine, soda, coffee, etc. sit for any amount of time, it stains. They tend to collect toward the outer edges sometimes and must be shoved/squirted toward the drain. There are some permanent stains and scratches that I cannot get rid of inside the sink.

Here is my experience: My Farmhouse sink is easier to care for than I thought. Making a paste of vinegar and baking soda cleans up any stains. I find this easier to maintain than a stainless sink.

Porcelain sinks are great. I've chosen them in three homes over the last 23 years. Wet the sink, sprinkle comet; using a wet cloth rub the sink forming a paste. Let sit for 30 minutes or so. Spray a bit of water over the paste. Wipe the sink again, using your wet cloth and rinse.

To get rid of scratches in white fire clay farmhouse sink I used the smallest edge of a pumie stick. Can buy these very cheaply in a Home Depot kind of place. Gently, gently rub in circular motion then make paste of BKF. Rub in paste, let rest for a minute. Should take care of scratch. I also use the pumie sink for toilet rings....really magic!

I know this is an old thread, but thought I would post anyway for others searching this same question. In my old house I had a WhiteHaus 30" Fireclay farm sink in BLACK. I lived in a log cabin with black appliances and it looked great! I loved the sink, it looked brand new after 10 years, I used the protective grid and avoided most scratches. The outside corners were scratched from the grid and heavy use, but is was under the grid and not noticeable. Sometimes, I would see a film and used soft scrub or bar keepers friend to remove, then shined it back up with (believe it or not) Pledge. BTW, I cook and can ALOT it was heavily used. Now.....flash forward to now, we are in a new house and are in the process of remodeling the kitchen, BLACK will not work in my white kitchen, and I am afraid of the white sink staining. In the Black sink, you could see a slight discoloration near the drain and on the outside corners...slightly brownish, and a little dull (even after my Pledge trick). So I am worried that in a white sink, these will be VERY Noticeable...We live in a rural area with well water that has as a lot of iron (even after treatment). In the bathroom the tub drain is stained red/orange. For this reason, I am deciding to choose a stainless farm house sink. Bottom line, if you can go for the BLACK, it is a lovely sink.

I tried the baking soda and vinegar paste as suggested by someone else and it worked great with the scrubby side of a sponge. My sink looks brand new again :) Thanks for the tip!! This will be my go to from now on!

I just put one in 10 minutes ago. I'm a huge cook and it will get a lot of use. Just needs taking care of

I have a brand new Sinkology Fireclay farm sink. Is it okay to clean my sink with the version of Soft Scrub that comes with bleach?
