What was the reason?

When my daughter was weeding today, she came up with the fact that the Japanese beetles were here in force and several were on my Jules which is a beautiful pink rose and of course is sweet smelling. I remember reading some time ago from someone in North Carolina or Georgia who said they just pick off the latest blooms--all of them just to leave nothing for the beetles and by the time they were ready to bloom again, the beetles had gone. I am no sprayer, but wonder how some of the rest of you manage this?. I hate those things. Why did God put them here? I can see no good reason. Will be reading. Barb

I am assuming you intended to post this on the Roses forum. It isn't a practice that would apply to tomato plants. Not even sure it would work on roses since JB's damage foliage more than blooms.

Four O'Clocks are supposed to be poisonous to Japanese Beetles! I heard this on a forum for grape-growing.

They are just starting to migrate to western Missouri. I saw a few last year and just this last week I picked a half dozen off of an Asparagus bed. I haven't seen them on the beans yet thankfully.

Agree with Dave. Even if you remove the rose blooms there will still be plenty of foliage for the beetles to munch on. Only thing you can really do if you are no spray is to knock them into a cup of soapy water.

Linda- I've read that about Four o'clocks as well.

Japanese Beetles attack the flowers first. They rarely damage the foliage here. Unless there is a heavy infestation, I would do as Rodney suggests and flick them into some soapy water.

Yeah, Japanese Beetles love rose flowers and buds .Also I have seen them on Dahlia .
