Planning to paint the walls striped with navy and white. Need to decide how thick the stripes should be what color navy to use.

I would make the stripes about 16" - 18" wide. Measure the walls all the way around the room and divide by a number that would be about 16-18" wide so your stripes will be consistent around the room. And for a teen of either sex I would choose a blue something like this, as I would not want it to be too dark or too greenish or too purple:

I would also use a white that is close to your trim color if it is white. Paint your ceiling the white color. Now you can do anything with bedding, window treatments, pillows, etc. in the room, add reds, yellows, greens, etc. Whatever you like

Navy and white look great together but I think stripes are visually too much for an entire room. You could consider doing them on just one wall.

If you decide to go with the stripes, I would not suggest adding a lot of other bright colors unless you and your teen would like the room to look visually busy.

If the stripes are thick the room will have younger feel (especially with nautical colors). I would recommend thin, vertical stripes.

l would start on one wall and see if it's enough and see what you teenager thinks. I would start at about 12", but adjust wider as necessary so that you have evenly laid out stripes. There are also on line tutorials.
