front legs of furniture must be on rug

If this photo represents the whole room, the rug is too large. The rug should go under the front legs of the main piece of furniture but not cover the whole floor space.

You can go smaller since you have to push your sectional into the wall. This one almost fills the room and that's too big. Measure by using painter's tape on the floor. I like the rug to slip under the front 1/3 of the sectional and extend past the end by a foot or so. Since your's runs into the wall, you can have it extend past that end, but you can do it on the right end. The point is to ground 1/3 of the sofa on the rug, rather than have it look like you skimped and can only manage to get the front feet on it. That would make the rug appear to be too small. A generous rug, but not room filling, is what you need.

I do not like the trellis design rugs as they are a trend which will die sooner than later. Safe to go with Oriental or Persian all over pattern with many different colors.

I think a small rug, and add some pillows to your sofa.

Rug is too big but so is sectional. Seems like you barely can open door and its just overall too large for room.

Yes, I'm aware I made a bad call in the sectional. Lesson learned. We just bought house, have a baby due in 4 weeks and a beautiful kitchen renovation happening. Have to live with some things for a while. Not keeping rug, the room is actually much longer- fireplace on other end of room.

Create a moe sociable setting (and seating for more people) by separating the two (or three - it's hard to tell) units.

That's an interesting idea @jbtanyderi I never see people break up a sectional anymore. It's a very large room. Depending on how the sectional comes apart you could make a nice seating arrangement with it. The rug is a little too large either way. Save a little money with a smaller one.

Float the sofa about a foot away from the walls so that it's not all squished at one end of the room. To balance out the sofa bulk, get a round coffee table with a clear top or a large round leather ottoman in a light accent color:

Colorwise, anything new that you bring in should harmonize with your brown sofa, brown floor, gray walls, and an accent color. Right now the solid brown sofa overwhelms the room, so you need some contrast and color. Here are some possibilities of combining browns, gray, with yellow. Browns, grays, and light blue or orange would work as well. Sofa pillows should be creams, brown/gray, accent color.

Got it. These rugs shown would work. Here's another with more gray than brown. Just do a search for "gray, cream, teal" and see what comes up. Keep it light and patterned to contrast with all that couch.

Floor rugs are great for softening up rooms with hardwood floors and adding style to a room.

Be aware of how wood reacts to rooms with sunlight however, sunlight can change the coloring of your wood flooring very subtly over time. It's not that big of a difference in coloration. But when you have a floor that's partially covered by a rug in a room that gets sunlight then you will have an inconsistency in coloring from the rug covered area to the uncovered area. To prevent this it just requires that you move these rugs on occasion.
