Sort of hard to tell what's going on in your video. I had this happen with one of my windows and it was caused by inadequate guttering, so the water was basically running over the gutter and into the vent space, which led to water behind wall and ultimately through top of interior window frame.

How about pictures of the head flashing at the head of the window from the exterior? I would suspect that is where the problem lies exactly as Sophie describes.........

Today I have a similar problem with formal dinning room window at the first floor, see picture shot toward the bottom of top window frame. Water is dipping. I inspected around and found not identify the root of cause. Any suggestion is appreciated. By the way, the house was built in 2013. The first leaking was found in 2016. Thanks.

I had the same problem, when my house was resided, we discovered the dining room window had been installed without any flashing.

@cat： hardly believe they could do like this. I am in Houston now experiencing Hurricane. I went to the roof and found some cracks at ridge of garage near the leaky window. I went to lows bought a gallon of patches (apply in wet and dry condition) and filled/covered the area...finger crossing now and see what will happen.

Leaks are so hard to deal with because where the water is coming out isn't always where it is coming in. Take Sophie's advise to pull all the trim, inspect for rot, repair, and properly flash. You also might need to have a professional roof inspection and a gutter upgrade. We had problems with a leak and had it looked at by two roofers, our siding guy, and multi-service repair/remodeler. All of them inspected, scratched their heads, and said call a gutter company, which we did. We upgraded to a larger gutter and downspout in the problem area and added additional splash guards to keep the water the gutter. Problem solved. Good luck!

My god... my house only is 4 years old. I could not believe I would have to deal with leaking problem that early. I will hire a pro. to change a brand new window and new flashing for that window and see what happens. This will be the first try prior to big bucks. Thank you Tallgrass!

I just checked the builder warranty and found it has been expired at the end of the second year from closing date, except the major structural components which is still under warranty in 10 years after closing date.

Windows seldom leak in that manner. I would bet that the flashing details are lacking. The roof may have soemthing do with it as well if there are cracks like you mention. The window may nbe fine you just may need to have the unit pulled, siding taken back and the unit properly flashed. Of course it is impossible to tell without more info and better pictures. But you also have plenty to worry about with the storm at the moment.

Than you Millworkman. Yes, after we put Hurricane behind us, I will check on roof with water hose and find out if anything other than flashing suspicious. Then I can pull out window and redetail the flashing and seal.

I am in south metro area of Atlanta, GA. During Irma, my first floor's windows (north facing) about 8' on each side were leaking rainwater from the top of the window, similar to the manner of leaking in the video by Ada Lam above. The exterior door in between the windows had water entering the wall and you can see stains around the door still. I have called in 3 roofers, 2 G.Cs to advise the cost of repair and remedy and till now I am still uncertain about what caused this and who to call to get a definitive understanding of the root cause. Most contractors look at the silicone seal around windows and flashing for loose gaps. One pointed out the weep holes are all clogged up. One in particular believed it has to do with gutter - whether they are sloped right, if one more down sprout is needed, and a portion of facia is loose. His view is the water would have come form the 2nd level from the gap between brick and framing and find a weak point in the windows of 1st floor and entered the house. I think this and the weep hole being ineffective are more convincing. The silicone seal for the most part is intact, while we can certainly replenish the seal, I do not think that is the root cause of the water intrusion. Still I am looking for what type of experts or what companies to call to further determine the root cause. Should I call an window expert? What about brick repointing professional? Hello. I have the exact issue.

4 year old house with brick siding. Two story house on a basement. The window is on main level. There are two windows above. But there is no window above the leaking window. My window also used to leak from the top during heavy rains. I had two roofing/gutter guys look at it and they could not see a problem with the gutter. They adjusted the slope, but didnt help. Then I finally got a ladder and went up to check myself. What I found was, the end of the roof had a flashing that was extending over the gutter. It caused all the water to skip the gutter and drain over on to the siding. How obvious and stupid. I dont know how these guys never saw that problem.

I cut a little piece of metal and stuck it to the flashing at 90 degree. So now the water falls into the gutter again. And the leaks are much better. It is still leaking in extremely windy, rainy days. Need to put some more caulking around the window trim. The house and windows are 20 years old. Oh I found out, the kind of flashing that should have been used at these edges is a kickout-flashing. Not whatever is currently installed.

Here is an update and how we got the issue fixed for now. We took out the window trim out, It appears the builder put some sort of expanding foam around the window. Since we closed the house during winter, it appears the foam did not expand/work well. All the handyman had to do was to apply the foam sealant and re-fit the frame trim back. Please see if this helps
