Looking for Stair trim ideas

We just had our stairs sanded and stained- decided to Sand and paint the backs white which we haven't done yet. looking for ideas for easy stair trim. Our stairs are not standard straight up so looking for something easy not too complicated. Also wondering Fr opinions if we should paint or stain the wooden shelf /ledge ?

Did you ever figure out a way to add the side trim? We are having the same issue.

Yes it was a nightmare. We had to make a template and cut the wood ourselves. Ended up having to caulk any gaps. Still want to finish it with a trim piece along the top but haven’t got to it yet.

Ugh...That's what I was afraid of. Well your hard work and patience paid off, they look great! Both contractors tell us we need to rip the stairs up to put in the skirt but we really hate to have to do that. Thanks for replying! At least I know it's possible!
