You need a new fixture...drum style, a rug, perhaps pull the draperies back, remove things off the china cabinet. You will need to add artwork. Need to see the other wall.

This room is made up of furnishings of a old world 70's traditional style.that might feel right for you, as an adult with sentimental feelings..but as a family with children...I feel that there's a conflict here. The draperies are so heavy that they become drab and depressing. The overall look says "we have hand me down furniture....we'll just stick it here because there's space. I've learned how to appreciate what spaces are used for. Your flooring is beautiful. The space seems a bit lost.. with the conventional placements...ei: table under chandelier. This overall space is screaming out in desperation...in need of brighter, fresher wall colors. Get rid of the dead granny feeling and update the wall color..get rid of those horrific funeral home drapes. Lighten up!! Throw a splash of color on a wall..or if this is to intimidating.. put a colorful painting on the wall that, right now is covered up by that massive life sucking china cabinet. Add an area rug under the table..preferably jute..as it withstands the harsher life of family wear and tear. Go light colored with an additional floor treatment. The contrast against the flooring will pop out! Bring that window covering into the 22nd century! A modern window treatment can only enhance your beloved family furniture pieces. A paper roman blind..from ceiling to floor would breathe life into this otherwise sad drab room

Lighten up! Looks like you have a large window in the dining room. I would suggest making it airy, and match the white chairs. Also bring the curtain rod to the ceiling, that would give more height to the room. Other than that I think it is gorgeous!

Also know that there should not be anything else in the dining room, besides table and chairs and china cabinet. Nothing to distract from a good meal.

I guess I should mention that I took these pictures at night before going to bed. Otherwise the curtains are open.
