If you were going to DIY and do not feel like removing it and smoothing out the wall, you could try painting it white but you should prime it first so the paint has a better chance of adhering.

Technically it can be done. With the right materials and the right prep you can get anything to stick to anything else. But then you will have an ugly, painted stone wall. Which you will forever be decorating around....trying to hide it

Go ahead and give it a go. Spend a few hundred on all the materials. I suspect this will take a FULL WEEKEND of work = 16-20 hours to get it done. And then decide if you can live with your work once you've spent all that time, effort and money on it.

If not, spend a few hundred removing it (assuming this is a veneer and not a true stone wall). A few hundred more patching and painting the drywall. If you paint this and DON'T like it...you will have DOUBLED the cost of your project.

If you remove it, you will only have ONE set of costs. It will be a few dollars more to remove it and to patch/replace the damaged drywall...but then it is gone forever.

You get to choose if it is worth throwing money at it to paint it (and a lost weekend) or whether that money would be better spent going towards removal with a little bit extra for that patch/repair/paint.

I would try painting it first. If you are worried about adhesion the go to Sherwin Williams, they have a paint PH balanced for painting brick work. Maybe $100 for paint and couple of hours of time. Break it up with some pics or prints. Worth a shot!!!

Well, thank you all your comments; lots of insights; just as a clarification: this is not a neneer, but a true Granite block wall, having three sides, with the opposite side incorporating a fireplace. Seems like painting or Sheetrock look viable

There are some really good plywood panels available that you could use to cover the wall or replace it. With a fireplace on the opposite side, covering it would be a better idea.
