Run to your closest paint store and ask for a heat resistent paint and then buy some sample stones (doesn't have to be like yours) and practice using differnt colors. Better yet hire a professional architectural finisher or as some people say, faux finisher to really get a great job! There is a solution for everything...if all else fails, you can tile over the stone! I have done this freqently with brick. A good installer can fill in all the uneveness with a product to make the tile lay evenly. If you haven't looked at tile recently you haven't lived!

Thanks! Good suggestions. I don't wish to tile over it, but i didn't think of heat resistance and didn't even think of getting a professional faux finisher to do the job!! Practicing with similar 'stone' i s a great idea. thanks so much.

The paint around it is a putty or 'stone' colour to draw out the greys and cream-ish colours in the stone.

Honestly, its pulling more pinks and oranges likely from the wall color or decorations you have around it - if you altered that I bet it would feel different. Its actually a really cool blend of color that would work in a ton of design themes!! (hard to tell with the small picture vs full view)

@bearly - Yes! Ok, I see the color variations - the wood you are using around it has a TON of red in it which isn't helping and the paint colors on the wall look to have some red undertone vs blue as well. My honest thought is its really pretty, but needs a mantle and a picture/artwork etc so that alone if you did a natural wood color vs the cherry color you have would be a HUGE help

She's onto something! - I love those tones - mantle a bit distressed but seems like the stone with its natural quarry look and not smooth. Maybe new stain then at the sides, or remove some shelving?

I have wanted to do just that since we bought the place! My husband too... a distressed mantle... but we are not sure where to place it. As you can see, the shelves on either side are placed at different heights. I have always wanted to change out the cabinets to a more rustic look, and have distressed shelves instead, but the cabinets match the kitchen (I don't actually like the kitchen either. This is definitely my husbands dream home!LOL!) and it is an open concept...I took the picture from in front of the island at the kitchen.

I guess I will have to have a conversation with him: >) I was thinking it would be more cost effective and easy to stain the stone.

I had very similar stone veneer fireplace. When I whitewashed it turned grey tones.
