i like a paneled look on the bottom - possibly white with a cool grey above the rail. can do a faux panel as well.

Is it just what we are seeing that has the chair rail? I'm assuming based on the way you've arranged the table that the room is open to another space?

Why doesn't the table position match the ceiling pattern? Turn the table 1/4 turn.

Here are more photos. The table really doesn't fit the other way. I'm planning on new furniture and painting hutch. Trying to decide if I should remove chair rail and how to paint trey ceiling. Walls will be accessible beige and ceiling true white flat. Should I do vertical portion in trey the wall color like currently or ceiling color. I don't want dark ceiling. Thank you !

Remove it if you're wanting to go less formal.

I've often just had the chair rail the same color as the wall instead of painting it the trim color. It reduces the contrast but still keeps some detail to the space. You also don't have to worry about fixing damage from ripping it out. I would paint the vertical portion of the trey the wall color as it is now. Good luck!

I am exactly where you are…thinking of removing the dining room chair rail and the wall paper below it. The room is open to our foyer and has one odd transition point there, but I also think it is going to open up the room and accentuate the height of the walls and the tray ceiling. Somehow, I also think it seems a bit dated…maybe, because it is a ”cleaner” look without it?
