What has surprised you most about Gardening?

It’s fun to get dirty.
When you’re addicted to gardening 3 to 5 years
doesn’t seem that long so planting seeds no problem and so worth it.
My Significant Other wanted to help—in limited
ways
All the plants that are edible
All the weeds that aren’t necessarily bad
Retail stores only sell one one/millionth of the
varieties they COULD sell
The postal worker is a double agent
Seed catalogs are worse than any of the 7 Deadly
Sins
I laughed when they told me about Wintersowing
and now I’m recruiting people to do it.

Worst Enemy-husband with the mower

New Plants-all of the above. I’m now looking for a pink
flower I saw in a 70s movie this weekend.

Plant Project-Flowers Along Freeways ( Interstate 80 dissects
Nebraska east to west and it would be fabulous to see flowers and natives plus
it would make the miles to faster for many

Garden Surprise-postal worker is a double agent (and she
retired!)

Favorite Plant: Blanketflower/Gaillardia

Fav Group: FOTESS

Fav Advice: I like
the idea of using vinegar to kill weeds, but I hate the smell.

Worst Enemy - Squirrels, now who does that surprise?

New Plants - All of the above

Plant Project - Helping my daughter start her gardens at her new home.

Garden Surprise - #s 2, 5, 6 and 8, especially #5!

Favorite Plant - Iris, or Jacob Cline Monarda or..........!

Favorite Group - FOTESS

Fav Advice - have appreciated all advice I've been given, implementing it is a bit of a problem tho!

This looks like fun! Here are my answers:

When protecting your plants, who is your worst enemy?
1. Bugs, mostly green caterpillars because they hide so well. I recently had a HUGE tomato hornworm on my potatoes- it was hidden so well, I didn't even notice it until it was right in my face!
Where do you look for new plants and flowers?
1. Websites mostly, also some retail stores. I try to do local nurseries for the most part, I feel like they just have better stock (and more options). I haven't ordered online yet, but I've been getting into starting from seed vs transplant so that might be changing soon.
If you could shut down a government program and use the funds for a plant project, what plant project would you choose?
1. School Gardens- I think it would be great to get kids understanding not only where their food comes from, but the effort that goes into growing that food.
What has surprised you most about Gardening?
1. All the plants that are edible. I enjoy the reward at the end of the growing season!
Favorite Plant: Artichoke

Favorite Swap or Swap Group: Never done it before, but perhaps one day

Favorite “Natural” gardening trick/advice: Picking bugs off of plants, killing them and leaving them near the plant they were found on- I did that for a while and now I've got a few songbirds that do a daily evening hop through my container plants, looking for new bugs to eat! Work free pest removal!
