All of your inspiration shots do not have crown molding - maybe that answers your question?

I would have to agree with not installing crown molding. From you pics, the style you are going for does mesh with the use of crown.

I actually think the basement is far enough removed from the main living space it can stand on its own. In your case I would only suggest crown moulding if your wall to ceiling transition isn't as crisp and clean as you'd like. This gives you another chance to finish it off.

You have plenty of height for crown moulding & I love it, but I wouldn't in your basement. Crown is traditional & fairly formal. Your basement is casual, almost rustic. If you really want crown, I'd go w/ a plain (no detail) 1x4" that looks like barnwood.
