High tile or remove subfloor? Help!

We finally got around to removing some badly-damaged wood parquet flooring in our foyer. I have grey slate porcelain tiles that i am going to lay in a chevron pattern.

Here is my dilemma... The new tile is taller than the parquet was, and i also need to put down underlayment with coats of thinset, which means i am going to end up with a foyer that is about 1/2 inch (at LEAST) higher than the abutting hardwood floors.

I know there are ways to add transition pieces that slope, but is that going to look bad/ be dangerous?

The other option is to remove a layer of subfloor (i THINK it is at least 3/4 inch particle board from what i can tell) and put down something thinner. Thoughts? Help!!!
