I'd probably go with 2 different countertops. One on the perimeter and one on the island. Less variation on the perimeter and then striking beautiful movement on the island.

Couple added thoughts: go with a larger sized floor tile, you've got a lot of square footage to cover. And you didn't mention new hardware, but go for it. It can really change the look of the cabinets.

First, if possible, I would remove the big ceiling stove vent and replace with a smaller stainless one. With your cabinets, you could do a dark gray soapstone counter or the opposite direction and do a creamy white Silestone quartz. Update the hardware and remove the wood valance above the sink and the kitchen will look quite updated. Here is a dark gray counter with a wood cabinets...

Most can assist you on-site if you have lots of tile samples to choose from so they can see what works best with what. The kitchen is the heart of the home and it should tie in with what's going on in the living room and master suite.

Your cabinets are a nice mid-tone - simple cabinet profile - so you could push it traditional or modern depending upon what else is going on in your home - I'd hire a pro to come out and help you on-site.
