Thank you for your input. I was told by my county permits dept. That the portico can be up to 200 sqft. with out requiring a permit.

IMO a portico will be very awkward to build with that roof line it will require a lot more work than you think

I would suggest hiring a good Design/Build firm in your area that will help come up with a portico that is appropriate to the exact style and dimension of your home. I'm sure it seems simplistic, but it really requires more thought and planning if you want it to look integral to the design when all is said and done. The last thing you want is something that looks "stuck on" as an after thought.

Everyone thank you! Really some great ideas! The trees that are in front of the windows were already there 15 years ago. They have grown out of control! We do plan to remove them this Fall. I love the idea of the lower plantings with pops of color. I thought by adding a smaller portico above the door and tying it into the roof line when we redo our roof next year would actually enhance the curb appeal by matching the roof line above my garage. My husband and I are DIYER"S and do most everything ourselves. Maybe, I will hold off on the portico then, since no one here seems to think it will add anything to the curb appeal.

You are confusing portico with a pergola. A pergola is not attached to a home and would generally not require a permit for a small one. A portico is an attached porch, and always requires a permit.

Neither would at all suit the home or add any value. It would detract in value from a good example of ranch architecture. Additions from Mars are not what that house needs. A new roof with architectural shingles would be a much better investment.

I disagree with User. A small portico would look terrific!
