I would paint the stone and the walls but not the wood trim since its all throughout the house it looks. I would go with a medium tone neutral for the stone and creamy tone on the walls.

Paint the fireplace wall a rich color so the stone fireplace pops less. Choose the sage color that is in the rug. As far as painting everything white, the room looks white enough. The wood helps warm it up.

Paint the fireplace and wetbar the same color as the walls. Leave the rest for now.

I wouldn't paint the FP, but would select a paint color for the walls from the stone. I would replace the stone mantel with a beefy wood one. You might have it made to slip over the stone mantel. I don't care too much for the dark grout. Maybe you should consider replacing it with a lighter shade. Brass is making a comeback, but if you don't like it you could paint or replace the firescreen. I think we're all assuming these are MLS photos due to the dated seating. This room calls for a more relaxed look with a slight lean toward rustic. You can achieve that with the mantel - perhaps a log or beam style one. Don't paint the woodwork or cabinetry yet. Try to find a color from the stone that looks good with the trim and cabs in their current state. You can always paint them later if you wish.

everyone has a different view, but i dislike the wood trim, i would paint that white and the walls a neutral from the stone, but you'd need to wait til you purchased your major furniture to select the color.

I agree with decoenthusiaste, with the additional suggestions of changing the light fixture above the built-in and what looks like a ceiling fan in the great room. I'd wait until I got my furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories in the room first then go from there. Start small; once you paint the stone that's it-you can't go back :). I can attest that shutters are no fun to paint, either...

Anyway, if it were me I would not change the stone of the fireplace nor paint the cabinets. Maybe update wall color to a neutral from the fireplace stone. I love wood but still might paint out the trim (but not the cabinets). I'd wait on anything major until you have your own stuff in the room, I bet it will have a completely different vibe. Enjoy!

This is a dramatic room whose windows will cause the appearance to change dramatically over the course of a year. I suggest living with the shutters and white paint for a year, then making your plan. Consider lightening the mortar in the fireplace - just run some standard beige masking tape over the mortar to see how it would look- by painting just the mortar.

Replace the art with a flat tv if this is your family, tne furniture can stay wirh a modern tapestry,accesories and a new colorful rug.

Eliminate that table near the fireplace. PutThe console with the white shape lamp behind the solitaire art.

I would keep the fireplace as is. Paint the wood window trim, built in's, and doors all black.

I love a lot of things about this room! But I would replace the Windows/ window trim and floor trim I would do all white and thicker on the base board. Take the popcorn off the ceiling and paint the walls a warmer neutral color the compliments the floors. I actually like the fireplace stone.

I'd leave the fireplace alone. Go industrial. New backsplash in bar area, recessed light, black bar style hardware mounted vertically. Black modern entrance light. Bring in Carmel color from fireplace with furniture and continue black metal accents.

I would not paint the fireplace, the natural stone is beautiful! Change wall paint and furnishings for an update.

A slightly warmer wall colour and new furniture would do wonders for this room! Also - consider painting/refinishing the brass fireplace insert. The wood trim looks great with the floors and cabinetry - and painting these would call for painting all the doors/trim throughout the house. This is a big/costly undertaking, and would really take away from the charm of this home.

Stunning room. I love it!!! To me the stars of the room are the hardwood floors and stone fireplace. If this was my house I would paint the room with a warm white color

nuetral furnishings. Adding color and texture with pillows, art, and accessories.

I think I would also remove the shutters and blinds and replace with curtains but only the bottom 2 windows and slider. I also like the wood trim and cabinet and agree that it adds to the charm of your home.

I would whitewash the fireplace, paint the walls a pale driftwood color and slipcover the furniture in white cotton duck cloth.

Just looking at this space without knowing anything about you and the rest of the house, the positive features are:

- floor to ceiling stone fireplace

- great views

- clean wood floors

- high vaulted ceiling

- open space plan.

My Recommendation:

The Transitional Look that resonates with my clients has been a mix of nature and clean lines balanced through texture ( finishes, furniture, lighting and accessories).

- Keep the stone Fireplace ( great texture) but paint the wall around it. Pick one of the darker colors in the stone that would contrast with oak wood floors. You'll end up with a very impressive accent wall that will anchor the entire space nicely. Definitely change out the fireplace metal trim to black or dark.

- Remove the shutters - Shutters are closing off the great view ( nature) and interfering with space, balance and scale. Revisit new window treatment options later.

- Paint the walls in warm light taupe/grey and make sure it works well with your fireplace.

- Paint baseboard, window and door trim in white. This will help make the space light and airy.

- Leave the interior wood doors and built-ins as is - it will pop nicely once everything is painted.

- Get Fabulous Chandelier to fill the vaulted area - go BIG and SOMETHING

Once the house finishes are completed to your liking, the house will help inspire you for the new furniture direction.

I like the room except for some of the furniture and the artwork.

I like the stone fireplace. I think the room only needs a series of small changes. 1) new fabric for the furniture 2) remove gold fireplace screen with a black unattached one 3) paint molding a warm white color 4) replace rug 5) add floating shelf flanking the fireplace. 6) add large mirrors / picture flanking fireplace 7) add contemporary light fixtures 8)paint walls light tan or light blue.

Love the vaulted ceiling:-) there is so much to work with in this room. I personally love the wood shutters and trim, my furniture choices would just be lots of white slipcovers and add some wooden beams on the ceiling. Perhaps a darker wood stain on floors and shutters of lighter:-) have fun, you have so much potential to work with and obviously good taste to have chosen the home:-)

It's a nice room and I like the stone fireplace. I wouldn't change that.

I notice that you have no ideabooks yet. Have you thought about your new furniture? I would suggest that you start perusing images and put some idea books together. To what colors are you drawn? Is your style more contemporary or traditional? the answers to these questions will determine whether you should paint the moldings and shutters (which I quite like, btw), and what color(s) you paint the room. As other posters advised, you will want to live in the space for a while before making any major changes.
