Light fixture in a wood paneled study

Study/office type room in our new home is all wood paneled with built in wooden bookshelves. It's a dark-feeling room and I want a light fixture that will make it bright enough to read comfortably and feel a bit less cavelike but I don't have any ideas- my taste runs a bit modern and the room is decidedly traditional. Any thoughts?

I recommend you paint it, every last stick of it. Remove the scallop from the bookcases. Take down the circa 1980s track light. Install pot lights in the ceiling on a dimmer. Then go industrial or modern with lamps.

I would have painted it for you, but it required too much prep work.

Here are some transitional light fixtures, which will work with traditional with a modern/contemporary twist!

The glass votives are pointed down in this light fixture, which means you will get maximum light from them! If you want votives that go the other way, I suggest staying away from frosted and colored glass because you will not have as much light.

If you find you need more light than with one chandelier/ceiling light, I suggest wall sconces. I have them in my house and use them in dark places in the living room and family room.

Sorry none of those would make a reading light I suggest you get a nice ceiling light and a floor lampp for actual reading center ceiling lights will never be adequate for reading.

Ok this is the room. there is some wall lighting but the room still feels so dark to me. what do you think?

For reading, I don't rely on ceiling ltg. I use floor lamp that is shoulder-height. I use halogen b/c it's a natural white light & dimmable. I find halogen to reduce eye strain. I used to read until after midnight w/ it.

I recommend a solar tube for that room.
