den renovation

Our den is in the midst of a renovation and we could use some ideas for painting and decorating. The room was once a one-car garage, renovated by previous owners. It has a laundry closet in one corner, and 3 steps up into the kitchen, and a cut-out of the wall to see into the kitchen, which has bright red cabinets. We use the room for entertainment and relaxing, and it also has an office area with a large computer desk that takes up about a third of the room. These are pictures of how the room used to look before it got torn up for the renovation.

What we are doing in the renovation is putting drywall up over painted wood paneling, and drywall on the ceiling, and hardwood over the concrete floor. The hardwood is a medium "butterscotch" color.

We plan to keep the computer desk and the new 50 inch TV, but are open to replacing most of the other furniture, but maybe not immediately. (Need to pay off the renovation itself first!) My husband hates the couch and we both hate the rug so those will probably be the first things to go, and I think they would have the biggest impact on the space anyway.

I guess what I'm looking for are suggestions for paint colors and coordinating them with furniture choices and ways to improve the room in general. If we were to do an accent wall in this room, which wall would it be? Since the room is so open to the kitchen, I feel like its colors have to coordinate with the red cabinets that are so visible and attention-getting, or at least not clash with them. Right now we're considering using Porter Paint's Ponytail with a possible accent of Cocoa Pecan.
