You have a coastal vibe so I would go with the rope. It would be easier and cheaper too.

But I think the rope and the shelf need to be chunkier in size. I don't like the hooks used in the rope picture. Go to a specialty hardware store (Lee Valley Tools maybe) and find something substantial but still with a nautical theme.

We've built some furniture using pipe and I really like it. If you do it, you will find that the pipe comes with an oil coating on it. Wash it with dish soap to remove the oil and it will begin to rust almost immediately. Assemble it and spray all the pipe and especially the thread that is exposed with clear lacquer spray. This will keep it from rusting.

well puremichigan, you've certainly felt the need to respond to ALL of them. and as the dilemma has progressed, they actually ARE other questions. If they bother you, feel free to not open them or respond. I have to say I'm slightly shocked to see rather unprofessional behavior from a houzze "pro" I think it speaks loads to how it would be working with you on any professional project. Just my thought on you, since you feel the need to share your not very kind or understanding stance on me. Thanks!

I personally like rope design. And putting shelves will make the whole wall have move finished look. Also with your Fireplace having horizontal design and cabinets move vertical, long white shelves might be best. We have Ikea's in the kitchen

I would not put shelves there but add some art unless you have some really awesome pieces for the shelves they just look cluttered if you insist then I agree some floating shelves as neither one of those suit the space,

We live in humid area, and best bet is wood or recycled wood for shelves. Rope can stretch in humidity and pipe gets yukkie. Start with finding brackets you like then get wood cut to fit them and your space if you want a unique look.

Are you still planning to use the distress wood mantel?

I would go with the wood shelves with pipe. Think about what you will put on these shelves, they must be sturdy to support books etc., I would recommend 2" thick shelves.
