Living room

I have this beautiful oil painting that I want to use in living room. What can I do to make it fit?

That painting is too bold to just be sitting there by itself, that's why it currently does not look good. I would pull that couch away from the wall and put a console table behind it (underneath that painting) with some other smaller art pieces/decorative items (continuing to pull from that blue) on it to help calm down the boldness of that painting. I would not flank that couch with those two standing lamps. You can have one if you want, but I would put a large faux tree on the other side ... again trying to soften that harshness. Then I would decorate the coffee table better again with lower items pulling from the blue. I would get better throw pillows that match ... yellow makes no sense in the space.

please understand I am not a pro. but i find putting a table there with stuff on it to be much the same as a couch with stuff on it? I think you have great bones there. Here are things i see.

First it does look good, wonderful original art always looks good. and I do not see a problem with it. Museums have nothing under their art. and one would have to say that is their natural home if they could have one.

I understand the feeling to bring into the room though, i feel that pull too. Plus i have a problem with your pillows. from here i see no reason for the yellow, I really do not like white/off white on taupe couches. they kinda look like empty holes.

I am a pillow person so let me play with those. all are<$25.

i know it is too many, but i just so love blue! i could probably scare up some more too. also a couple rugs too. if i can see why the yellow and the other chairs i could do better.

Do you think having the painting reframed would help using a cream mat and lighter frame. Really do not have room to pull sofa away from wall . I guess my question was more of should I have it reframed
    To fit wall.
Yes understand about pillows , I had another painting that went with colors and have not moved them.
Thanks for all the beautiful pillows samples. Where can they be ordered from?I guess I need to send a pic with all cleared off. Rug is a cream color which I can not change.
As I said in earlier text I hung the picture with out thinking that everything else would throw it off. I had other colors in there before.
My other chairs are black and white cowhide. The sofa is grey
    And walls are gray.
I will send a a better pic in morning.
    Thanks

I'd start with a blue throw where you now have the cream one....one of the medium/lighter shades from the painting...and a couple of chunky sculptural pieces on the floor near the base of the floor lamp on the right.

I do not feel that it did. i automatically wanted more saturated colors on the pillows, even on the rug? i just did the blues because there was concern. to me the art needs no accent.

regarding locations, several are involved. do you have a laptop or regular computer? there is a more info button at the bottom of each pic will take you to the store if not the exact pillow.

HI irastucky! When I read your question about re framing the art it made me realize what really doesn't work in this painting - this thin black frame. I really think if you were to re-frame it and add light mat and a lighter, modern frame - that would soften it up and help a lot. I also agree with some other advice here - I think the lamps don't work (mainly the height), maybe try smaller ones on top of side/accent tables. I also love plants/trees indoors, so I think that would look great and take the focus a little bit off the boldness of the art (as cpaul1 suggested). I would maybe play around with creating a gallery wall by adding smaller art objects on each side of the painting, but make them asymmetric. PS I'm not a pro, so just my personal opinion and 2 cents

Agree with havingfun. Love your art! It's gorgeous and it works.

I actually like the gold pillow-I like that "not" everything matches but then again, I don't believe that art has to match your decor perfectly; it only needs to competent it.

You have a beautiful, sophisticated, and elegant color palette. I do think that you could find another way to fill the corner wall, though, perhaps by adding a tall plant or pedestal with a vase or sculpture. I recently purchased an acrylic pedestal for the corner of my dining room. If you like to collect artifacts, sculptures, or glass art, that would look so nice instead of having 2 lamps, and it would add some more interest to your space.

I don't think you need that much blue to make it work, though. I would allow the art to be the "star of the show!" The art can stand on its own ;-)

I wonder too if yellow and ivory offer enough contrast. These without blue on couch, but elsewhere..... a blue pouf?

    continuing to id places

    Wayfair =4

Zazzle = next to last one.

once again. you only need a few, i would replace the cream with them. and put more gold in the room.

Definitely change out your pillows. Find blue and white ones that are bold enough to balance out the painting. You might also consider changing the area rug to include some bold blue too.

I think partly you need a pillow theme - keeping blue pillows, and adding more brown, how about this elegant initial pillow?

Love what you have done so far. Great painting. Works just fine over the sectiona.

Select some blue ceramics for the table, maybe change the throw to a more interesting blue /color woven throw. Bold graphic pillows make the best statement for contemporary room settings.

Bev's purple throw made me notice it for the 1st time, and as havingfun said: soft white becomes blah on that taupe fabric [?]

How about the addition of a rug with some blues and taupes in it?

I am liking all ideas and appreciate the time.
Took all the pillows off and trying to get a clean picture.
    Gray walls
    Cream carpet
    Black and white cowhide chairs
Does this help give a better idea of space?
    Thanks for all great input.

    Beautiful space. Love your chairs!

see like it is perfect now. if wanted 1 pillow and lumbar in left corner and one pillow or lumbar on the other side 2 blue and your gold? or 3 blue.

I think i would like a metal side table with a different lamp. lets see:

Yes good, any ideas for the other lamp?

From here, not just the cream pillows, but the yellow also, have little impact - especially with striking art. Also not enough with sofa and chairs.

Your lamps - glass? - have a shimmery cool appearance and well I'm repeating now, but you need strong pillow colors.

    Ira Stuckey thanked everdebz

i really did not have a problem with the lamp, you can have 2 different ones now. i was bringing in the gold from the pillow, giving you a touch of bling and metals give like a different texture? (saying wrong, brain burp) I can try to find another though.

    Ira Stuckey thanked havingfun

For fun, I'd repeat your orchid color - like I posted above sort of - lay a towel or blouse, throw it on - and see.... and other colors too.... what most bothers you about the room if anything?

I agree that your frame does not compliment your painting. Have your tried going frameless? I would look for a blue bowl that pulls from your painting for the table. It will be a place for storage as well. If you are needing light, I would consider a small table in the corner with a lamp and move the tall lamp to frame the Windows. Move the yellow pillow to another room, add a multi color throw to the white one and not worry about the carpet.

Yes thank you. I want a clean modern look. My husband likes modern transitional style. All of this started because I wanted to move a tv set from over fireplace,

Sorry, just noticed the comment that said you can't change the rug right now. Often comments show up late..must be a glitch on Houzz or my computer. So in that case, I would keep some off white/cream pillows that will relate to the existing rug.

Having fun, believe me, I wouldn't/couldn't spend that amount on a rug either, but sources like One Kings Lane and Joss and Main often have similar rugs for a lot less. Just have to admire the beauty of some of these handmade rugs!

As far as reframing the art, is it a painting on canvas or it it a print? It is hard to see on my monitor.

It looks like a canvas, so you really can't do a mat on it, and I like how the dark frame relates to the metal coffee table.

One too many directions / is cream rug a different, a lighter color than walls? Just now I remembered it's the color of the mantel? Even so it doesn't relate well imo to the sofa's color... does it match the chairs?...... this is nice like yours / but the art.

Cowhide chairs have such a presence....

Photoshop to change mantel from cream to another neutral would be nice [from here I am curious - ivory/cream seems too delicate for chairs and saturated art].

ira i have had computer problems. but i really wish to discuss that frame. I come from artist, i am kinda sorta one too. I have framed and matted a bunch. i can tell already that if you remove the black frame and put white or something else your painting will feel like it is lacking something. The black frame is pulling the small amt of black from the painting. by doing so it gives the painting a 3 dimensional quality. if you see another color in there you can play with it. but removing the frame or making it white will detract from the painting.
