Do you know the paint color? blue, grey, or blue-grey!? How long have you lived there?

When you walk in front door, you need to keep space along wall at left, correct? After space for foot traffic, how wide do you have for furniture, etc..?

Do you have any furniture at all for this room. How do you plan on using it - conversation only, TV viewing, etc.?

a nice number of idea books, helpful pics? 1 lol

so do you want to go glam? do you have any idea of colors. styles?

I'd take that 'cool gray' picture and duplicate it entirely in your space. Of course, there are items in it that are very expensive, but you should be able to find similar items, much cheaper(Target, Home Goods, etc...).

Hey Latisha, looks like you have a blank canvas, that is something so many people wish they had. This room probably feels huge and you just don't know where to start, well here is my 2 cents. You have a great opportunity to really play with scale, if it were me I would probably use a large oversized sofa on the wall between the two windows. I would build the rest of the furniture arrangement from there. Float the seating/conversation area around the position of the sofa. Make sure that at least the front legs of each of the pieces of seating are on the rug and don't feel like you have to push everything else up against the other walls, space between furniture and wall is not a bad thing/

Chester 3-Seater Sofa, Beige · More Info

I would also use a patterned area rug, something sophisticated but with some darker tones, this is going to anchor the room, its going to help keep your eye from being drawn up into that huge double height vaulted ceiling. Maybe also trying blending a contemporary rug with a traditional sofa

Bashian Mystic Area Rug, Gray, 8.6'x11.6' · More Info

Add new drapes, if it were me I would choose something with a bit of weight and texture, and maybe even something that is two toned, if the bottom portion of the drape is a darker colour it will also help to give some weight to the room. It looks like the drapes you currently have are hung right on the top of the window. I would move the rod up at least a foot maybe even two, and make sure your drapes are long enough to hit the floor, I would say no more than an inch off the floor.

Ivory and Muted Blue Linen Color Block Curtain, Single Panel · More Info

I would suggest a giant piece of art above the sofa (similar to the one in the picture you have saved to your idea books)

On the long wall that goes from the front door towards the stairs and other end of the room, I would consider a large credenza with a big over sized mirror above it. The mirror will reflect light from the opposite windows as well as the seating area

As far as accent pieces, mix in some pillows and such, you can pull colours from what ever rug or drapes you choose! A large coffee table in the middle of the area is a MUST. and make sure to include side tables, (some other users have posted ones above that would totally work with the look you want to do), if your going to be using the space as a classy seating/entertaining space people will need a space to set a drink.

Use a mix of textures, on your furniture and accessories to really give layers and make the place feel like home!

Don't forget your room will also be viewed from the balcony of you second floor, if you are really adventurous hang some other large art up really high on the wall!

Happy Decorating and post some pics as you go along we would all love to see them!

Curtains are 84" - I like how at stairs they're nice height imo. But over near doorway looks like you could have much higher... what's the budget or are you changing them? Maybe with your 1st layer of blinds, yours could merely be opened... but they aren't very full as is..

What type of hard wood flooring is that? Mahogany? If so, I agree with a lot of the other comments that you should go towards whites, light greys, and soft colors for the furniture so it can contrast the strong, bold color of the floor. Or since i'm seeing a lot of rug ideas being thrown out, what about a light colored rug (maybe a fun texture like shaggy or hand-tufted) with a bold accent color for sofas like a nice apple red or a re-orange. Have fun with it. If you need help pairing color choices, reference the color wheel and try complementary colors.

I agree, she does not need a decorator - just a decent budget.

Neutral room? See Iconic's photos with professionally done curtains - money! If you are doing it yourself, I think you'll need color, lest it look somewhat like a [can't think of better word] cave: tall and well-lit but drab.... anyone else think so? Color.
