I'm in the same boat with brand new luxury vinyl plank flooring. I was just looking at the rugpadusa site that has been recommended before for quality rug pads for various flooring types. If I go with something basic that's safe for hardwood floors, they recommend a rubber (natural) rug pad. But isn't that what I should be avoiding for a vinyl floor?

Rugpadusa has "safe for vinyl" as well as "safe for hardwood". Again, the PLASTICIZERS in the manufacturing process are the problem. If rugpadusa says it is safe for vinyl (I believe they have a 100% guarantee) then they are safe for vinyl. They will have created a pad using NON-reactive plasticizers...which is completely different from the "rubber" pads found at Walmart.

Of course you could start off with a rug that has the tag that says "Safe For Use With Hardwood" on it. Better yet, a rug with the statement "Safe For Vinyl" would be even better.

The hint for this category of rug - low-end retailers (Target, Walmart, etc) do NOT carry products like this. Medium level retailer will have SOME rugs with this option - but no all (Ikea). High-end retailers will have plenty.

I have Coretec Plus luxury vinyl plank. I just called the manufacturer, US Floors and they said no rubber or latex in the rug pad, or to use a "non-staining" rug pad.

Has anyone used WellnessMats on their floors? They are 100% Polyurethane. I was wondering if this would cause an issue on vinyl tiles. TIA

How about the "GelPro Mats" advertised online. I just sent a question to them and they said to contact my floor manufacture, but their backing on the rugs is polyurethane. Is that going to hurt my luxury vinyl tile?

Any one tried the polyurethane Gel type mats on their vinyl yet? Need something to stand on at the kitchen sink but do not want to discolor my flooring.

It's hard to say if polyurethane will disturb vinyl. I know that vinyl will disturb the polyurethane finish of wood and cork....so it is *possible the plasticizers (those are the things that do all the damage) in polyurethane mats will damage vinyl.

That's all we can say right now. Until someone tests ALL the polyurethane mats out there - on all forms of wood/vinyl/cork/lino floors - it will be a 'hit or miss' event.

Cancork, what about EVA? I only ask because I happen to have some lying around, and wondered if it would do until I can get a 'real' mat from Rugpadusa. I'm also very seriously considering testing my old rubber-backed mats with a scrap of my flooring. Any idea how long it would take to show a problem?

It can take as little as 3-4 weeks before a stain appears. The urethane finish found on most vinyl floors can also be 'softened' by the chemicals found in rubber. That can cause an 'icky-sticky' mess without causing a stain.

The best option is to use "off cuts" (you want to keep as much of your floor planks in tact as possible - future repairs will depend on it) underneath the rubber mats. Leave them in place for a month or so...and then see how it goes.

I already have a rug and it's light - it's a synthetic runner. I looked at rugpadsusa but was hoping someone had experience with one of their products first hand. We have 3 cats who like to race down the hall and a toddler, so it needs to stay put!

How about a simple cotton sheet under a thin poly rug? We've got to act quick for thanksgiving. I've got a large poly backed rug and a king sized flat sheet trimmed a bit would fit. This would be under our dining room table so slippage wont be an issue.

I just bought a rubber backed rug, then read not to put them on vinyl plank. Could I line the back with burlap or fabric, or will the chemicals from the rubber bleed through cloth?

This is listed under the safe for vinyl/linoleum section but it does say it uses natural rubber.

We have cork floors and have to get rugs made of natural fibers with no rubber backing. I found a great company called Hook & Loom. They have cotton loomed rugs. They are thick, so they stay put. I ordered one for my landing, opened it up, put it down, grabbed my phone and ordered another.

Does any one know anything about Ruggable rugs brand? They claim they are safe for vinyl and hard wood floors and use a TPR material - thermoplastic resin used in yoga mats and are latex free. I am having coretec plus installed this week and want a nice entry rug. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I contacted Cortech and he was called the rugman I thunk, he said if we use PVC or polyester we should be fine. I bought some under The rug mattingnat Home goods it says safe for all hard floors, it is PVC wit something else.

Has anyone heard whether Ruggable mats are compatible with Luxury Vinyl Plank (Armstrong)? Here is what Ruggable says: “The synthetic, latex-free, thermoplastic rubber in our Rug Pads won’t stain or leave residue on hard surface floors or vinyl.” However, vinyl and luxury vinyl are two different things. Looking for clarity please.

Has anyone considered or actually used silicone mats on their LVT/LVP flooring? I have cubbies in my mudroom that we would love to kick our shoes off under, but don’t want to risk eventual discoloration from rubber soles. I guess silicone could also be used for a rug lining too if you found one big enough.

I'm wondering the same about silicone for . If I put some 100% silicone caulk on the back of my rub and spread it out with a putty knife and let it fully cure before flipping it over and using, will silicone stain?

Nothing lasts forever. Just put the rugs where you need them permanently. If it stains change floor in ten years. always have new rug sane spot. thats what I’m gonna do. I did my own floors great price on lvp and saved install. So I’ll change in 7 to. 10 years. My rugs stay in same spot anyway.

Having discolored rectangular shape under the rugs was bad enough, but then I started seeing areas not under the rugs becoming discolored too...it looks like someone rubbed French's mustard on themselves and then rolled around on the floor. I asked my cleaning people to show me how they were cleaning the floor in the kitchen. They were moving the rugs from the areas they would normally lay and temporarily tossing them on other parts of the floor. Just the brief amount of time the rugs laid on these normally uncovered areas stained them too. I'm embarrassed to have guests now. Surprisingly when we went to shop for flooring for our tenant's apartment the salespeople were unaware of the discoloration issue.

I am late to this discussion, but as an FYI, my gel mats discolored my vinyl kitchen floor.

Are these LV plank or LV tile floors or regular vinyl? I am wondering if I have a LVP wood look floor if it will still be stained. I currently have cotton throw rugs, no damage after four years but they slip around a lot, and two polyprophylene rugs that also have not discolored my Armstrong LVP. Pretty sure I will not be getting a gel mat to replace my slippery cotton rugs, even though I would like something cushy. Maybe Ruggable is the way to go.

My local flooring place said yes rubber does discolour LVP. I have a rubber door mat for water and snow and he recommended putting under it Mohawk Home Low Profile Dual Surface Rug Pad. It has a nonslip back that is natural that does not use rubber. And won’t discolour the floor. We are just putting LVP down now. We had tile.

RugPadUSA.com sells pads for lvp. They are made of pvc and do not contain any latex, per cortex specifications for pads. You give them rug size and they cut 1 inch shorter all around (I.e. 8’ 1” x 11’ rug would equate to them sending a 7’ 11” x 10’ 10” pad. I ordered and they arrived in less than a week!

I had latex backed throw rugs on my vinyl floor for many years and no staining at all. However, I have a new vinyl floor and really don't want to chance it. The worst case would be if it stains there will always be a rug there to cover it, but who wants that? I appreciate the suggestions here.

I have Coretec luxury vinyl plank floors and they told me not to place a rug pad on the floor if it contains any rubber or latex, as it will cause discoloration of the floor. Ruggable rug pad that I recently purchased has Thermoplastic Rubber (TPR), so I will not be able to use this product on my new floors.

Ruggable says their pads are safe on LVP flooring but will they guarantee that and replace my LVP flooring if it discolorsdiscolors?

I guess I'm sticking with all-cotton bath mats in my doorways and larger rag rugs in my kitchen and living room. I can wash the rag rugs until they unravel and then replace them. They're less than $20.

I recently bought 2 Ruggable rugs, 1 with and 1 without the Ruggable rug pad. Since I can't use the Ruggable rug pad directly on my Coretec LVP floors, I bought Vinyl Lock Non-Slip Felt & EVA Rug Pads by RugPad USA on Amazon. For one Ruggable, I placed the Vinyl Lock pad directly under the rug. The Vinyl Lock rug pad is only 1/8-inch thick, so it is very low profile and doesn't have much cushion. On the other Ruggable rug, I kept the Ruggable rug pad for a little extra cushion and then placed the Vinyl Lock pad under it. These Vinyl Lock pads have both worked well so far under the Ruggable rugs.

Is the vinyl lock pad you describe made of EVA foam? and if so then is EVA foam safe on LVT?

I am putting in new LVT floors and have both ruggable rugs and EVA foam tiles and find contradictory information all over the internet...

Is there any new info if the Polyeurathane mats from WellnessMats are safe for use on LVP?
