We had a planter similar to these at a past home. I planted wild flowers and other flowers that were good for floral arrangements but also spread easily, there was some upkeep but we loved having the fresh flowers. This could also be a great place to plant herbs. However if you wanted something more traditional there are several sites on the internet, magazines and books that have predesigned garden plans. Starting with a predesigned plan can often be a great starting point. First research the suggested plants to make sure they work in your zone. There are many software programs that can be used to tweak out your design plan. One that I have used and find helpful is the HGTV landscape design software. It allows you to download a picture of your area to landscape and gives you a virtual picture of the outcome. It even has an option that shows what it will look like in the future.
