how do you want to finish the basement ?

Are there moisture issues? Have you had the concrete (slab and walls) tested for moisture? We need a few more things to go on.

I want to use it for a Rec room. I have had it checked there are no moisture problems. It is a cottage on a lake in Michigan. It was built in 1952. I am thinking about painting the walls, leaving the ceiling open with a rustic look. I would put a picture on if I knew how.

Making the most out of your basement

Figuring out how you want to use your basement: the first thing we would do is discuss how you want to use your basement. Do you have regular out of town guests that will be staying in the basement? Do you have you children that will use the basement as a recreation area? Do you watch tv or do you need a gym? Some homeowners prefer the laundry room in the basement. Storage is always needed. Wine cellar, music room, hobby area ... there a any number of ways to make a great basement.

Our suggestion is to first think about how you want to use the space and then work through the different options.

You should also make sure that the basement is dry, well lit and temperature controlled. A comfortable, bright basement will get used.
