it looks like mealybugs or spider mites to me. Could you gently scrape it off? I would plant it in a pot, it should do fine.

It's been submerged in water, so would they really go underwater to do that?

And ya I tried scraping it off, and they would come off but I wanted to see if anyone knew what it was before I did anything to possibly hurt the pit.

Plant it in a pot. It should grow successfully.

I realize this question was posted 2 yrs ago but I can assure you the problem with the white stuff on your avocado root has nothing to do with it being grown in water. I have five growing in water and only one has the same problem, white chunky stuff that will fall off if cleaned. I was told its fungus but Ive also heard other things. What did you do was it ever planted? I'm going to go ahead and plant mine and see what happens. I would be interested in hearing what happened.. Happy gardening, don't give up!

im hoping someone will read this sometime soon lol. I’m writing recognizing this an old post.

Ok. I have 3 pits in 3 jars indoors . I Started them all around the same time. The 3rd, I believe is a week behind the other two. I changel their water every couple days. When I change the water, I make it REALLY warm. Since I started doing that, they really grew! I put them in the window sil of the day time & take them down once it gets dark . Its been cold being that it’s winter here, so I don’t want them to freeze. They seem to love the heat!

It’s been interesting watching them grow through all the stages & changes. They started out just flaking . They eventually split, & you could see little sprouts coming through. Now, 2 of them have leaves, but the 3rd still looks like a baby. Not sure why, but I thought that one was a goner! It got burnt by the sun! Like a sun burn early on. I still kept it in the jar.

Along the way, weird stuff has Happened. When they were just pits, they got a white film all over. Wasn’t sure if It was from our weird/gross township water (that we don’t drink), or if it was some form of mold. I wiped them off. They kept growing. It seems they grow in spurts.

Now, However, 2 of them have nice leaves. The leaves have been forming tiny holes since they grew! Remember: these are indoor plants. It’s winter here in Pa & bugs are practically non-existent. What is this !? I’ve tried Googlibg the answer , but the info I find seems to be more about outdoor trees than pits floating In water.

Also, should I give up on the 3rd one? It has a little sprout it looks like, but it’s starting to turn brown. However, they all turn brown around the Pit area. They All 3 have lots of long roots coming through. They come in white & turn brown. I figured, since every tree root I ever saw was brown, this was ok?

ive babied the crap out of these seeds! Lol I speak to them, wipe them off when they look dirty, give them warm water. Whst else do they need? Thanks!

I grow mine in a jar with small pebbles and I think that is mold but I don't think that should hurt your plant. the mold is just feeding of the sun next to your plant and drinking a very little amount of water but if it starts to go towards the top of your plant or on the leaves, just take an old, flat, dull, knife and gently scrape it off.

You can try to plant it in soil. because it might be like that because it’s been too long in the water.

Likely to be fungus gnats. Best solution is sticky yellow strips in the pots to catch adults, and neem oil spray mix, or mosquito bits, but the mosquito bits are very expensive. Hope this
