Whenever I layer rugs for a client I never line them up. Here is a picture of what I am talking about.

Put the top rug on the diagonal over the sisal. This adds some visual interest.

Turn the rug at an angle. I think the rug may be a bit too large for the size of your sisal area rug. It's only supposed to be an accent for color and texture.

I dislike sisal rugs in any space and see no reason to layer these in the space why not just one large rug like the top one.

Turn the sisal rug 90° and move the sofas closer together. Perhaps better yet, leave them the way they were originally and turn the sofas. That way you don't occlude the view out the window.

Don't get a different chair. Either get a matching Grayson chair or return this one and get two of the mocha pattern.

I would leave one sofa facing the window, and put the other sofa against the long wall so it faces the tv and leaves the window area clear. Then put the blue chair and one more chair with their backs to the window, facing the L grouping. Then the rugs make sense in the way you had them laid out the first time.

The layering of these rugs is weird. The beautiful blue rug is way to big to be on top of that sisal. I agree that either you should find out from the original designer what they had in mind, or use one of the rugs elsewhere, or return one. I do like layered rugs, but these line up wrong. If you take the blue rug , and put it on the diagonal, it is still too big !

The new arrangement is perfect. I didn't realize there was a fireplace and TV on the other wall, so this arrangement is functional, as well.

Can the Alvarez rug be returned?

I like the sofas in an l-shape better..window free. You can do two mismatched chairs, but the colors are too different.

I would get two matching chairs. Return both rugs and spring for the bigger size Alverez rug. They just look odd layered.

Not a fan of the floor lamp. It just looks kinda dinky.

Not really needed if you keep your sofas at in an l-shape.

I agree with Blue Booby, the rug in the larger size will look the best in the space. :)

For curtains, I think you have a ton of choices. I would probably stay more neutral because of your current color scheme. Your windows are rather tall and wide, so going for custom-made will definitely be your best bet.

Belgian linen Optic White curtains like these will definitely look great in your windows.

Or maybe a MIst Gray?

I am a big fan of naked windows if you don't need curtains for privacy or light control. So I'd nix the curtains and go for some big art instead.

Ok so thank you all again for your help. We took back the Grayson chair and ordered the bigger 9x12 Alvarez rug (delivering this week). We saw this Pennie chair and loved its look/color. It fits the room better. The question is do I keep just 1 chair or get another matching? Curtains? Ideas for coffee tables/accent tables (not keeping this Fernando table) would be much appreciated!!

Your new chair looks much more comfortable. How are you going to place the sofas? That will help dictate size and shape of coffee table. Anthropologie has some great coffee tables...the Banla Wood Coffee Table comes to mind.

Love the new chair, get another one. Also need larger end tables for your lamps.

If you will be keeping the sofas in the "L" formation, I would suggest not using the arc floor lamp but get an appropriate sized square end table for between sofas that would be better proportioned with the lamp you have on the small table. Like the Alvarez rug a lot. Matching chairs definitely. Like the new one you chose.

Good tips so far. On coffee table, I think a glass top would be a mistake if you don't do drapes. Light would glare on it and every little fingerprint etc would gleam forth in the sun. Love the single rug. Best choice. Big art on wall would make this room. Big coffee table too.

I can visualize a oversized coffee table in this space especially with large art on that back wall. Here are a couple of "examples".

With two sofas and chairs, a large coffee table will bring interest, function, and style all together.

The larger rug looks perfect! I would switch the sofa on the wall with the blue chairs though. The larger sofa looks better on the large back wall, and the blue chairs are open enough that they don't block the window.

groveraxle always does great renderings, love all the coffee tables suggested. I think the windows would look stunning with roman or bamboo shades, paired with drapes or without. It will add some interest to the windows, while still letting in a bunch of that natural light.

Although the room looks fab with larger rug and sweet new chairs, I'm still in the camp of placing sofa on larger wall and chairs in front of Windows. Large artwork would look so much better hung over sofas.

The only issue with putting the chairs near the windows (my husband is in the same camp) is that we are doubling this room as a TV room for the whole family.

We are building a space for the TV in these built ins (with doors to hide it) and having the chairs near the windows would hinder the TV view of anyone sitting in the chairs or the back sofa.

I'm in the chairs by window camp. If the chairs can not see tv by the window, how could the sofa? Put tv on reticulating arm so both sofas have great views. Swivel chairs would be ideal for tv watching, just move the chairs a bit when viewing.

We moved the chairs to the windows. Better?


Also we got the Switch (CB) coffee table to match the table between the chairs. Will it work for this space? 48" x 25"

Thanks for moving chairs. However, the larger table belongs between sofas and smaller table between chairs IMHO. The lamp looks good on table between sofas but if you love the arc lamp in the corner over sofas -- well it's your room. Hope you took suggestion to put TV on articulating arm which would seem to solve viewing concern if it continues to pose a problem. Look forward to seeing art over sofas. So far you have made some wonderful choices.

And to answer your question, I think the coffee table works with the sofa placement.

The layout with two sofas facing each other was much better. Normally I'd say chairs by the window, but the two sofas are identical, and they have high arms, which makes for a funky corner arrangement. They are in perfect balance opposite each other.

That little rug has great colors in it that go very well with your sofa (be thankful for that, I'm going through trying to figure out my rug issues) but it's definitely too small. I'd return both the sisal rug and the smaller one and put the money towards one larger rug of the same color / style of your smaller one. It would look fantastic!

I too like the chairs by the window. If you are concerned about the tv visibility, put it on a swivel mount. Put the chairs facing straight and swap the end tables.

I think the space is coming along but i am a bit concerned the coffee table will do nothing to anchor the space. Art will help but think about more substantial coffee table or a pair of tables. Or a large ottoman.
