Bluestone just sent a notice that its "deer resistant" bulbs are on sale. If you mean for sale (full price) I recommend Scheepers and Colorblends. For best selection, order now, but don't get them delivered until October. (actually reputable companies will not ship until the best planting time.) I think planting mid to late October is optimal, but I've also planted with the snow flying and they come up fine.

Also, State Extension Services often have bulbs for fall sale at excellent prices. Usually a limited selection of tried and true varieties and perhaps not top size but perfectly serviceable for a pretty spring garden.

If you are looking for physical stores that are selling bulbs, I know Costco has them already. I would expect HD and Lowes to as well, but I haven't checked specifically for bulbs. I do know they have changed their nurseries over to fall already.

That's a fact, suzab,. but I don't think buying bulbs at those places is the best place to buy high quality bulbs. (not that I haven't done it myself) The thing about buying now is it is way too early to plant bulbs and it is not so easy to store bulbs at home in the right climate conditions. Also, mail order places (good ones) store their bulbs in climate controlled conditions at the right humidity etc so they don't get dried out or moldy and the bulbs are shipped at the right time.

But they certainly cost more at Scheepers.

WB, if you decide to mail order, be sure to check "Garden Watchdog" which rates mail order companies. Don't buy from Michigan Bulbs and its affiliates which do not have high quality stock.

I have had very good luck with Costco bulbs. Not much luck with HD or Lowes. Costco was a good price and 90% or more came up and were true to the photo. That said, I have only ordered a few bulbs, so I don't have much to compare it to. I tend to wait until October to plant bulbs and keep them stored in my basement or garage until it's time to plant. Never had an issue.

thanks all. we've been trying to buy bulbs to plant at my m-i-l's grave when we visit new bedford, ma when we visit at the end of august. this year we were there 2 weeks later than normal. still no luck. I'll plant them at home and grow them in pots to bring when we travel from ohio next summer. she loved crocus so they will do well with this treatment.

Experience trumps theory. It sounds like you can plant now.
