Hi - Slate never really goes out of style, especially in contemporary homes. The size of the tiles and the way that they are laid can make a big difference in whether it looks updated or 60's. That being said, I would urge you to at least consider using wood in most of the areas of your home. Walking on stone all of the time is very bad for the legs and back and cold underfoot. Give some creative thought to it - maybe slate in the entry and then a thick (about a foot) wide border of slate in the public rooms with wood in the center... Or an accent wall of stacked slate.... I live in an older home (now). The slate is in the entry way and connecting hallways. It makes it seem verry dark. I would change it to white marble if we did not have a dog that would scratch it to lighten it up. The slate is very durable. Does not scratch like wood does with animals. Just thought I would give my input if it helps. Our slate also requires stripping and sealing at intervals. I do not know about newer slate.

Funnily enough I was just out looking for slate this morning. While I was interested in slate, I am now looking for a ceramic tile that imitates slate because it is much hardier and less porous. Having said that slate or tile - the most important thing is that slate can be made to look dated or modern. It is all how you place it in context.
