Jute Rug-- yes? no?

Hello everyone! My finance and I are moving into our first home. We are considering a natural jute rug for our dining room table. Do you think a jute rug will work with the table? It's hard to tell, but the hardwood has a cherry stain - jarring for the walnut table. From the picture, the only thing staying is the table. Curtains/wall color from previous owners. We are also on the hunt for a new light fixture. Our style is fairly transitional, but we really like the farmhouse/industrial look. Thanks for your help!

The only place I like a jute rug is outside my door so IMO no

Patricia -- thanks for your response! Do you have any suggestions?

HI -- You really don't need a rug for the eating area . If you still want one then try a woven or braided cotton rag rug or a durrie ... or look at some of the exterior rugs .... they have beautiful colors and are washable --- better to have something that is washable . As for a light fixture maybe one that has a black metal frame such as a lantern . Look at Restorationhardware.com ... lots of styles and kinds and will give you some ideas .

I think if you eat there daily, it's might be hard to clean. But if you don't, I personally like the jute look, even if it's not jute.

Thank you for your suggestions. We like RH and will check out their rugs. I know rugs are often not used in dining spaces, but, for us, I think it's needed. The room has a lot of cold, harsh elements, and we also feel the floor and table stain clash without a neutralizing rug.

love the wall color, maybe a rug with that color, new light fixture, and textured linen drapes

Just from the one picture I am concerned you don't have enough room for a rug. In order for chairs to comfortably slide back from table edge you need 24". Then the rug should be a bit wider and longer so measure and see what you think. Another tip, is to bring home small sizes of rugs you like to see how they look in your light and with flooring, furniture, etc. then if it works you can return small ones and get proper size. Loads of choices out there.

Thank you for your advice, Flo. I am about an hour away from our new home, but I will see if I can get measurements. There's probably 6 feet to the wall from the angle the photo was taken - not sure about the other side. I was afraid of that with the jute. Do you have any advice for light fixtures?

If we decide to keep the paint color, do you all think natural linen drapes would work well?

I don't like rugs under most dining tables, but if you are set on one, select an easy to clean indoor/outdoor flat level loop rug.

Linen drapery panels would work with this.

Any of these lights would provide you with a better quality of light than what you have now.

Jute rugs are nearly impossible to clean so I suggest an indoor-outdoor rug with some color and or pattern. That way if something spills, all you have to do is wipe it or for larger stains take it outside and hose it down. It's better to feel comfortable! Have fun...www.judydixoninteriors.com

Thank you for all of your comments! Beverly- so funny -- I had looked that two of those lighting options earlier today. You've given great advice on other threads, so I'm happy to see you here!

Okay... Moving forward with rug selections. Looking at indoor/outdoor options. From the photo, you can distantly see a contemporary, black hutch. Not our style, so I think we are going to paint it. I bought a sample of an antique white color, and will test it out on Thursday. Is the wall color okay?

I'm asking about paint, as we are considering painting the room BM Ballet White and updating the crown with something more substantial.

What are adjoining rooms? The color there looks pretty good. But hard to assess paint colors on line here. What colors are there in furniture in next rooms. I would live with it first, then see what your light is like, make up some sample boards in 3-4 colors and test out in your light. Here are a couple more light fixtures for you to look at.
Thanks so much, Flo. I will get pictures of the adjoining rooms for reference. Other than the table and hutch, we have no furniture. Bought the table this weekend and the hutch was left behind.

I don't know width of your table so you have to size your chandelier accordingly, but this is nice kind of nod to past with modern look.

A little more rustic, but rectangular shape would suit table.

Another rectangular shape that would be nice. I'm not sure on price point you are looking for, but you can use these photos for "examples" of shapes and styles as you narrow your search down. It's a process.

This one is a little more formal, but still has a wood look, but a bit of bling! I kind of like a little bling in a dining room. So, you have some "samples" that can help you define shape and styles you are most drawn to and we can help further from there. Just give us some feedback so we have "direction", because there is so much product out there.

I had a jute rug under my dining table. It happened to be a thick colored one and I loved it. Just know that after a few years you'll replace it since it can't be cleaned. That applies to any natural fiber rug, except wool or cotton. Jute rugs are so affordable, I think they are a great choice for a first home.

A tip for figuring out what size you need, is to put blue painters tape on the floor around your chairs with them pulled out so a person could get in or out. That will give you idea of size you need and how it can fit in the whole space.

Flo, we love, love, love your last lighting suggestion! If I can get you measurements of the table, do you think you could tell me if it will be too big?

You might want to look at lighter rugs that will give you some contrast between the table, floor and rug. A brownish jute rug is going to blend right in with the floor and the table and darken the room. One of the biggest mistakes I see on Houzz is that too many buy a brown sofa and all brown furniture.

Target has some great looking rugs if you look on line. Be sure to get a rug that's big enough so that the back legs stay on the rug when the chairs are pulled out. Usually that adds 24 inches to all sides of the table...so a table 36" x 84" will get a rug 9 feet x 12 feet.

I would be happy to give you input on the Savoy House Chaney. But I just checked size and it would fit most standard widths table. Do you know your ceiling height? I kind of think it is 8'? But if I know width and length of table and ceiling height I can give you good guidance.

Natural linen curtains go with everything. I would paint, though, because blue doesn't go with food.

I almost always use a rug under dining tables in my designs. It anchors the space and makes it feel complete. Jute is an easy rug with which to work. I have one under my own table and it is as easy as any other type of rug to vacuum. As mentioned earlier, because they are so affordable, it means you don't have to absolutely freak out over spills. Having said that, we have spilled red wine a few times on our jute rug which lifted out with prompt effort.

Thanks so much for all of your comments! And thank you, grover, for your renderings! Would it be too much trouble to see the BM Ballet White wall color? The visuals are a huge help!

Costco has some nice rugs from time to time

jsreams, whites are really hard to do and the lighting in this dining room is pretty bad, but this is probably close in hue. There is no way for me to account for the amount of light you'll get, and ultimately the only way you'll know is by painting a sample in the space.

Grover- you are a magic maker. Thank you so much. I will be back in town on Thursday evening, and will post additional photos, updates, and measurements then.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. So sorry for the delay in postings - took a little trip this weekend. Dimensions for the table are 32" x 72", so I'm thinking an 8x10 rug will work (after accounting for the chairs, being able to pull them out and still be on rug). Looking at indoor/outdoor options for easy cleanup. We do not have kids and no plans for them in the next 5-6 years. Here is a link to a rug consideration: http://m.costco.com/Bolero-Brown-Woven-100%-Polypropylene-Rug-Collection-.product.100053980.html Woven may not be best for under a table, but we have no idea - please let us know your thoughts, offer other suggestions, etc.

The ceilings are 8 ft. We are still looking at fixtures (we loved the last one Flo posted, but it's a bit outside of our price range - looking for $400 or less). The room is super dark, so something that illuminates up and out would probably be best.

We will most likely be painting the walls. We like BM Ballet White, but will decide on a color after all other choices are made.

Considering cream drapes to ceiling: https://www.halfpricedrapes.com/ivory-heavy-faux-linen-curtain.html

For your reference, I'm attaching pictures of the entire space. After several add-ons, it has a not-so traditional shape. I'm working on painting the hutch (General Finishes antique white), so please excuse that.

Again, thanks for all of your help. You all are magic workers!

Be careful about going too light everywhere and washing everything out.

Your link to the rug didn't work for me. Here it is if anyone else wants to look: http://www.costco.com/Bolero-Brown-Woven-100%25-Polypropylene-Rug-Collection-.product.100053980.html

    Hi there!

Jute is a good option for dining room spaces because it is a strong natural fiber that will wear well with frequent foot traffic and the possibility of spills. Jute can be found in a variety of different dyes-so you should have no trouble finding a rug to match the cherry tones in your dining room table!

P.S. Beware of allergies-Jute can bother people with allergies (just as any natural fiber can)

Thank you, again, Grover for your help! This is somewhat of the look we're going for:

Did you ever think about getting a Moroccan handmade rug? I think it is the best choice for the dining place, because of its rusty look you will not care about stains anymore.
