The solo cabinet will be an easy fix. Just put open shelves or another cabinet on top of the fridge. You could also move the fridge to the other end of the kitchen, then the door wouldn't open against a wall. If you redo the kitchen with cabinets to the ceiling, consider putting a pantry cabinet on the living room side of the beam. A kitchen designer is so helpful when it comes to finding solutions like that.

Your uppers do not have to extend as far as your lowers. I would get new ones that go to the ceiling on the kitchen side of the beams and around the frig, too. Don't do uppers on the other side of the beam.

Thanks everyone! I Think the fridge might have to stay where it is, only because otherwise it will be floating more in a living sitting/space since it's a bit of a transitional kitchen. But think something like this around and above the fridge might add a little continuity! Something to think about but will probably hold off on for a bit!

I like the idea of ending the uppers at the beam -- you could then put a set of open shelves to finish the length of the lower cabinets, which would allow more storage and finesse the beam issue.
