a nice mat for the items that are wet, and the discipline to take the rest away. if that isnt going to work for you, post a pic of the area, otherwise we are guessing.

I had the same problem. I bought this rack from Home Depot and it solved my problem. Matches my floors. Although I don't have boots to deal with.

IKEA has some interesting show cabinets that might double as a little entry table, if you're so inclined. I attached a pic of one example but they have multiple sizes/styles. I like how the doors swing down and hold shoe racks behind them. It won't help with boots, but could control the shoes. For boots, we keep a rubber boot mat (with sides for containing drips/mud/melting snow) near our garage door. It's ugly but it works.
