Advice For Master Bedroom Staging

Hi,

I am looking for suggestions on what color throw pillows and throw to place on my bed. The cover and pillows are white aND the bed and bedroom furniture are off white. The bedroom walls are painted with BM Healing Aloe. I am stumped on what color would look best. Do I use something bright or no? I will post a picture of the adjoining master bath as well. Thank you!

Such a tranquil and pretty room

You can go as subtle as you want, to keep that tranquility. You can also decide to go bolder to add some contrast. Both can be really successful.

Some examples of colors...both subtle and bolder..sorry I didn't dig deep but I can look some more if needed

I'd be tempted to go with something subtle(untypically for me)), but you know better what mood you want to create..

Ivories, pale greens, darker greens, grays, pale browns, pale blushes for subtle..

Or even take something white or cream, just textured..as in embroidered or woven or fur...

Corals and brighter pinks and greens for contrast

Love the your paint, furniture and bath; just beautiful. Any of the pillows Aprilneverends shared would be a great fit. However, the bed and nightstands seem to be crowding each other, most likely making the room look smaller than it is. You might want to consider removing one nightstands while you have the house listed.

Beautiful. Off topic, but what is your shower head and do you like it? Is it one of those two-in-one models?

April thank you for the suggestions and pictures. I appreciate you posting all the pictures for me to help me visualize what I could do.

Jill agreed, it does look crowded and I will take one of the side tables away.

The room is very large and there is a big part of it you cannot see in the picture. Across from the bed is a wall of windows.

Lilysmom thanks so much for all of your suggestions. I plan on buying some very nice white towels before we put the house on the market. I actually looked at some today.

We are not sleeping in the room or using it at all. I am too afraid of messing it up. I have yet to use my new shower so purrus I cannot answer whether I like it or not but yes it is the two in one and we bought it at Home Depot.

    Not at all

Your house seems so pretty and squeaky clean, I start really worrying about my own..:) Today I cleaned like crazy after seeing this bedroom of yours. Or maybe I started beforehand-and then I saw your bedroom and cleaned some more:)

I notice little things now that truly never bothered me before. So thank you for the incentive..

But no, I'll sleep in my room..)) until the end lol

Steinmart has some great throw pillows and throws in coordinating colors for very reasonable. Your Barnwood floors look just like mine.

April the problem is all our stuff was moved to another bedroom on the other side of the house (my home has two stairways going up to bedrooms-one to the master and one to the other two and a bathroom. The master is all by itself). I am too tired to go through bringing everything back again and am hoping the house sells quickly. If not then I may move back in there. We had to take everything out to get the floors redone.

Racencajun I do not have a Steinmart near me so will check it out online, thanks I looked in Marshalls yesterday. Although they have a huge selection I didn't see anything that really fit.

I would add some lamps to the bedside tables, one or two pretty pillows and pick a color from those pillows in a solid blanket to fold at the end of the bed too. In the bath, in addition to adding towels, I would add two pretty shampoo and conditioner bottles, a nice body scrub tub and sea sponge,TG's has a lot for a little. I would place a pretty vanity tray between the sinks with the soap, a nice hand lotion bottle and a small candle to further enhance the spa like feel of the pretty room.

Both rooms are a bit to sparse so it is hard to image real life in it. You need a fine balance of clean and organized mixed with real life In Order to get buyers imagination engaged I believe. Good luck your rooms are very lovely.

Rather than moving away one of the end tables, have you tried the bed on a different wall? I would prefer not to have the path between the doors being around a bed anyway. Looks like you have a queen bed in there. Even with one end table/nightstand, someone with a king is going to question whether there is room for their bed.

As far as the colors, I like the sublte colors above.

    very pretty..

and yes..I also wonder why I'm doing things, for some future buyers I don't even know yet, that I didn't do for ourselves..

I don't believe you need to purchase décor, no matter how inexpensive it may be, to stage this already lovely space for selling. Buyers aren't after the throw pillows and hand towels, and I believe buying such things is completely unnecessary. Remove one of the nightstands and scoot the bed and remaining nightstand to center better on the wall. Actually, I would probably even go ahead and remove both nightstands as you don't need to display anything on them to drive home the point that this is a restful bedroom.

I'll never understand why we've come to accept the HGTV notion that we have to add pillows and pictures and geegaws in order to sell real estate.

Accents in blues (teals, turquoise, navy) paired with pops of soft yellow will help create an inviting retreat!

    IdaClaire, agree with you too:)

I'll have to remove some of my pillows and art, probably. Not happy at all about that. I myself can very well appreciate the space with somebody else's furnishings and art..so this idea of depersonalizing doesn't speak to me, at all.

I did remove almost all the breakable ceramics I adore..but at least it makes sense, for them to be somewhere safe..

I left some. We'll see maybe I'll put more of them away too, when it's time for showings.

I agree Ida, but it seems a little sparse which sometimes feels cold when house searching. It is an unused room so that explains it. maybe shop your house and place a few things in the room as if you were actually using this as the master.b I think a few items, either new or borrowed from your other rooms, will take this pretty space from being a little flat to lively and fabulous.

Beautiful rooms! You don't need to add much, but if you do, my suggestion would be to go with just textures of white or the soft sea foam blue and green you have in your bathroom tiles. You could show them as is, IMHO.

Thanks so much for all the ideas and suggestions. each one is very much appreciated.

I agree that HGTV has been a curse in some ways. I do not mind spending some money to brighten up the rooms and make them appealing and I have had to buy some furniture but doing it as cheaply as possible. If we do not do our best to set this house apart from any others it could be on the market a long time. Most homes in our area are selling for low 200's to mid 300's. Those homes are small ranches to mid size homes not fully updated. Very few are selling in our price range.

The bedroom definitely needs more personal touches and I will be taking care of that. We painted the entire inside of the home so all pictures were taken down and put in storage. I did not want to put nail holes in the newly painted walls. There is still a tiny bit left to do in the master (paint under heating elements as the stain and poly from the floor look sloppy underneath them, painting the master bath closet door). I do feel the room needs a bit more color with a pillow or two and a blanket at the end.

PJ and Company thank you for your suggestions! The walls look light green during the day (more blue at night). Wouldn't teal and turquoise not match with this color wall? I have some pillows with aqua, I will see how they look on the bed.

lascatc I think this wall is the best one for the bed. All other walls either have a window or multiple windows or doorways. There is one other wall but it is even smaller.

    tnfarmhouse your bedroom looks beautiful.

April, I feel the same way, I wish we had done this sooner but then we would have to probably still do some work to make it look 100%. We have been going through the entire house since April and it has been brutal. Now my husband is digging out the crawl space in the cellar and pouring concrete. Hoping it is done by the weekend. Lots of work. I am so ready for this all to be done but it is bitter sweet.

This is one pillow I found and is a possibility but I am still looking! Thoughts?

I think you could probably use a quilt or throw you already have across the end of the bed and little else. And I say that more because we are entering fall than the room looks too plain. Plainer and clean beats too much/too busy.

I like to see pictures on walls, but the lack of them tells me I won't have a lot of nail holes to fill and either touch up or repaint. I think people can get past that.

I have had my bed under high windows, between windows and even right in front of a bank of windows. I know we look for a solid wall for the bed, but it doesn't have to be. In fact, I remember loving waking up in that room with windows as my headboard. If the room is really god sized and appealing, people will probably like the size and figure they can arrange the furniture differently.

I would think you should have no problem selling that house. I know I'd be looking at it if I was in the area. Your agent might need to do a little work to get buyers' attention and bring them to the area if the folks in your price range tend to look in other areas -- that's how they earn their fee. Good luck.

Nancy I love the coral floral pillow. When I first saw the room my immediate thought was coral. Do a couple of coral pillow cases and stack them with two white cases. A solid coral throw across the foot of the bed would look great. Get either white bedside lamps or silver. Maybe arrange a light coral teacup (think depression glass) and saucer on a small tray on the nightstand or other surface in the room. Is there a reading chair? Use coral colored shampoo bottle, lotion etc to accessorize the bathroom as mentioned above. Use the white towels.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I agree on not purchasing items that you don't need just to sell, at least pricey things. My rooms are used so we already have this bedding and I will only buy new decorative things for staging if they will be useful in my next house.

Thank you both for your thoughts.

Lascatx, Would you like to move to RI? lol

It isn't that people in or area look in more favorable areas, it is that very few homes in our town are selling above 400k. Most homes are 2200 sq feet or less, do not have the land and upgrades we do and many are first time home owners. There are some selling their first home and looking to buy a bigger home but there is not that many. Our biggest drawback is there is no garage but they can always build one. Our realtor told us it will have to be someone special looking but I have no doubt the house will be one of the nicest, cleanest and most updated homes on the market.

Prairie thank you for your suggestions. I will be buying lamps (or one if we move that end table which I think I may) and white towels and will buy nice soap and lotion bottles that will go with everything.

tnfarmhouse I too am buying things that I will be using in my new home as well! The furniture I bought will be going with me to my new home. It would be silly to throw money away for staging unless you can buy these things for very little.

I will definitely keep you updated. Still a bit to do but crossing fingers it gets done within the next month. I think I have been saying that since June!

I can relate - I thought we'd be listing by April/May and now I'm just hoping we make it before the end of September :(

I agree with IdaClaire and the 'frenzy' which HGTV has created with selling a home and buyers *expecting* move-in-ready, and everything to *their* liking. Recently dd/dh put their home on the market, and before moving in had it professionally painted, paying 7k. Several people have looked at the house, with one couple commenting about the colors, and asking their realtor if an allowance could be given. The 'kids' are still living in the house, love the colors, and until it belongs to someone else, have refused to either change the colors or give a credit allowance since it's considered COSMETIC! What are buyers thinking......or not thinking?

This may not be an appropriate suggestion for your situation, but it might be worthwhile to get a quote from a professional stager, to see what they might offer if you are really trying to set off your property. They would be able to provide the eye and pieces to help sell your property -- you won't have to buy furniture and accessories, or experiment with looks.

HB We spoke to our realtor about staging and the price can be pretty steep. I have been told by friends (asked for honest opinions) and workers that the house looks great and they all say they can't imagine it not selling quickly. I guess we'll see.

Patty_cakes I agree whole heartedly! My house needed to be painted so ai did with resale in mind. Your daughter is smart not giving money because they want another color. They can repaint when they move in.

I do think HGTV has hurt the seller because buyers expect perfection and perfectly staged homes.

    Tough to compete.

Nancy, if you really want to add a bit of color with a few pillows, a light lavender or a deep eggplant would look beautuful with the green walls. How do i know? DD has a bedspread very close to the same color and has used cream and lavender pillows, so pretty. In the MB she's used eggplant pillows on a neutral comforter, but the walls are a pale shade of the eggplant. I just wanted to mention it because it's so unusal and pretty. ;)

Thank you patty_cakes. I never thought of lavender. I already ordered the pillow above but I agree that the lavender would have been a beautiful color to use. I will most likely be painting a bedroom in my new build in Florida a green like healing aloe so will keep that in mind! I bet DD bedroom is gorgeous!

    deep eggplant rules, in general

that's my main accent color. works everywhere.

I'm so infatuated by it I seriously wanted to have my kitchen cabinets be painted deep eggplant(or aubergine, for short). But just the lowers. The uppers, I wanted to do in fuchsia..)))

Now I am going to have eggplant on the brain and probably be dreaming of eggplant tonight lol I usually pick light colors but agree it is a beautiful color. Here is a thought, what if you painted a room that color green but painted the ceiling (tray ceiling) or one wall eggplant??? I am thinking ahead for a future home.

Thank you Beverly. I appreciate the suggestion and all the pictures. I am hoping to do what you see in the bottom picture. The bedroom set was given to us almost new by my sister-in-law in Florida and we had it in our Florida home which we just sold so we brought it back for staging. I had older furniture in the room that was scratched and worn. I am trying to do the best I can with what I have. I will move one of the side tables out and move the bed over to give more room.

Aktillery9 thanks so much for the picture. I think it looks really pretty! I am hoping to get a very similar look for my room as well and this helps with a visual. Much appreciated!

I would keep it monochromatic and add a darker green throw and pillows. A very dark green pillow with gold accents could look nice, like the middle pillow that AKT posted above. I did my mother's bedroom a monochromatic green, or rather all green related, from green to blue green, but still staying close to green. I painted fabric for her curtains in the shades of green that I wanted to use and also made the curtains, bedspread, and all of the pillows. I have pictures of it somewhere, but they would have to be scanned, as this was done before digital cameras.

..to your question about eggplant and green..I vaguely remembered I saw this combo somewhere..now I've stumbled upon this pic again:

as you can see the green is totally different from yours-it's deeper color of the same intensity as the eggplant. I'd probably call it chartreuse?

Easier to pull off. But not only because of the similar intensity-mostly because it's a tiny space with lots of openings, so the accent wall reads less like an accent wall..it looks like a build in (which it partially is), and has a sense of purpose about it. Which it might not have if being just one of the walls in otherwise differently painted room.

Some people can pull off absolutely everything; I for example don't consider myself being one of these lucky people lol, so I'd be hesitant to do an accent wall, unless:

-architecture or shape of the room supports it somehow

-it makes sense for bringing attention to a certain element (an opening between two parts of one bigger open room, a niche, etc)

-it's close in color to the main color. just a bit deeper for example

-it's wallpaper that ties all the colors together including the main wall color. somehow it's subtler thus easier to pull off. well, and because I have a soft spot for wallpaper))

Again, there's not like it's right or wrong. It's more on the easier-harder scale..at least to me.

Now as for the ceiling..interestingly, I somehow see this happening more than I see an accent wall. I can't explain it to myself yet..)) Just a feeling.

But I think you need to consider many many things if going for it. Ceiling height, floor color..whatnot..

You can add chartreuse or coral color to create contrast. Without contrast everything blends together and there's no interest. It would also help if you include a wide spectrum of some darker tones and some lighter tones.
