If you could find a perfect match to the lightest color in your chairs, you could go that much 'darker'.

Krismays we are going to get a higher credenza for TV so that should help the wall some. Down the road the red couch will become some thing less bold as well.

Agree, you could pull the rust or gold tones to kitchen to warm it up. That would be nice. Gold/yellows go great with gray.

I think the rug is too small and a bit too neutral. I would get something which incorporates the colour palette you are working with....then picking the fabric for your chairs will be easier. You could play with mixing patterns...a mix of big and small is good....staying loosely within the colour palette. A more vibrant rug would lift the room I feel.

No stripes! The lovely floor has a somewhat stripe-y look, and shouldn't have any competition.

Funny,I love color but the pattern in rug scares me a bit. I feel like the floors and coffee tables are so busy it would all compete. But I also don't want it to just feel like a piece of carper.

Interesting to hear darker, I feel like the room is already really dark, especially with the kitchen so light.

I think the problem with the rug/coffee table is that they seem to reflect nearly identically the color and also shape of the fireplace and detract from it as a focal point. Also while the taupe/chocolate scheme is fine on the perpendicular walls, it looks unnatural against the golden tones in the beautiful flooring. Maybe a rug with a background of the lightest tone in your floor with some muted light reds to pull in colors from furniture would flow better. Also consider a lighter coffee table as the really dark color and square bulk of this one add darkness to the room.

This room is very heavy. I think that rug will lighten it up well :)

The coffee table is new, husband loves it. Red couch is not here long term, so I don't want to bring much red into the room. plan will be to incorporate a more neutral couch to help lighten room a bit.

I love the floors so maybe a sectional instead of red couch and leather chair , that rug is fine but seems more modern then your orange chairs but good with your coffee table

Good question. It just isn't feelin like the red is working. I just want it light and bright and am stuck with dark wood accents. So trying to get lighter and figure out how to bring in personality. Design wise it feels like a mess in my pretty new house.

Kitchen/dining area is way to stark - needs a warmer color. In living room, here's my thought. The rug is too small. Lighting is often seen as an after thought, but it is actually quite important for the feel and function of the room. Put all living room lights on dimmers, so you have maximum options. Try to dim ceiling lights as much as possible. Experiment with that until you get a comfortable level of light. It shouldn't be as bright as it is now. Get large wall sconce or table lamp in each corner at chest height. Enjoy!

you could consider a few light coloured cushions or a throw similar to the rug colour. 9' x 12' size should be perfect. if not, try putting the rug on a diagonal. always gives a different feel. enjoy the room.

Love your red sofa. Adore your floors. The rug you chose is perfect. Go with it in a size big enough to hold the furniture.

Thanks everyone, we decided today we are expediting the new couch and reupholstering the chairs. Our goal is to find something that coordinates well with this rug th as the will be in the dinning room. And we will be going lighter and more neutral with the couch and chairs
